S heard from James Madison (JMU) that he’s been admitted by the music school there, as long as the university admits him academically (which will be communicated by Feb. 1 since he applied EA). No info on scholarships but nice to at least get something sorta squared away today. I guess there will be more news next Friday (Dec. 20)…
Anyone hear from UCLA? S just got an email that takes him to a new application status site that gives “confirmation” of his app. It mentions decisions will be out late March, but no mention of an audition…
Received the UCLA email as well for both of my kids (one music major and one not). The email was just a general acknowledgment of the application…not from school of music. Hoping to hear something next week on prescreen, but think I read somewhere by end of December.
Does anyone know about schools openness to late applications due to unexpectedly deciding to put in transfer applications? And also therefore having pre-screen tape that is non-standard? Dealing with juries and finals while trying to put together a list of potential places is different than planning out schools and audition repetoire.
I don’t have any info for you (first year music applicant family here) but this sounds incredibly stressful and I wish you luck navigating it! I’m also curious to know how it goes in case it’s ever us down the road.
I am so sorry to hear things did not work out. Lots of hugs to both of you and fingers and toes crossed.
Anybody hear call backs recently?
still waiting… :-/. … heard nothing yet from the 5 schools and really want to book travel as it’s less than 2 months until these dates.
It will depend on the school and what their situation is in terms of people they already have done pre screens on. I would put together a list of target schools and contact their admissions departments and ask. It is possible (and this is pure speculation, never went through a transfer) if the program they are transferring out of is high enough level (let’s say for arguments sake Juilliard et al) that they may not bother with a pre screen since they got into a top program.
I did a little digging around, and from what I can tell (I looked at some of the top level music schools) they do accept transfers. At Juilliard if you are accepted, they seem to say you will be there the full 4 years, so if you finish a year at another conservatory, you would come in as a freshman (obviously, you would get credit for things like theory and and non music credits to fulfill those requirements). From what I could tell you also would need to audition( I saw no mention of pre screens required).
One of the problems you are going to run into is almost all schools have a december 1st deadline for applying for transfer. It is why contacting possible schools is important, it looks to me like they can answer questions better than people on this board can tell you because I suspect every school is different. Some schools mentioned transferring mid year, but there was no specific mention of how to do it, so again, your best bet is contact the school and see.
Honestly, it is going to be difficult because so much is involved here, if this is a performance major of any kind, I can’t see how there could be a transfer for the next semester because of the issue of primary teacher, most studios will be full unless a kid leaves after the fall semester.
I wish you luck with this, I am sorry it is so stressful. Given that the december 1st deadline is way past, contacting the schools will give you an idea of options.
Would love to hear (either reply or PM) which schools/faculties made the list (or missed the cut) and how it’s going for you! Good luck
What was your son’s final list? I ask because the more experienced jazz kids my son interacts with tend to cluster around the coastal schools and Oberlin.
Great news, Everyone! My son got a merit award today from his audition at Belmont University! It stacks with the award he got from admissions! We’re excited for him
It’s the same 7 schools. The in-state school I mentioned was University of South Carolina (definitely an up and coming program) where he’s already auditioned and been admitted. Still waiting to hear on prescreen results for Northwestern, UCLA, Oberlin and Rochester/Eastman. UNC didn’t require prescreens at all and IU didn’t require it for jazz piano but still waiting to hear about audition scheduling.
The other advanced kids at his school mostly target Juilliard, Vanderbilt and Miami but he has to be different
Belmont is my DS25’s first choice, and his audition is coming up on 1/25. He has already been accepted academically with sufficient merit, but I’m really hoping for a quick turnaround on admission to his program of interest (and ideally more merit for music!). Can you speak to your experience re: the timing of both the acceptance and the music merit? Did they come together? If so, how long after the audition? (Really hoping to cancel some Feb and March auditions if all goes well!) TIA!
S (tenor sax/jazz) got an invite to audition at DePaul today and JMU asked him to apply to a special music major thing as well. That’s all good but still feeling a lot of trepidation about fly-every-which-where February
My son is working on his prescreen solo now. We added DePaul recently because they extended the deadline for prescreens. I’m going to encourage him to get it in asap because it sounds like they aren’t waiting to offer auditions. Good luck to your son!
I’m an MM soprano applicant! I applied for a variety of vocal performance, opera performance, and early music programs.
Just heard back from my first prescreen- passed BU!
@jilukes Absolutely! Happy to help! Audition was on Nov. 9. Well organized, students receive folder with their schedule and all details upon check in. Plenty of info for parents presented. Were told decisions would come in 2-4 weeks. My son unexpectedly heard back via email in 3 days! Email has them check portal where letter is. They stated at the audition that if a student were to get more merit from the audition, they would be informed in mid December, and they were true to their word, as he was informed this morning in the same way as the acceptance.
My son received a named scholarship. I think it is called the Wilson Family Music Fund Award. I could not find anything when I googled it, but other info came up about their music school scholarships.
My son would study Commercial Music with a percussion focus if he attends Belmont. It combines performance with some production and some music business. What does your son play? Major? Best of luck!
Thanks for all the info! My son is a prospective Commercial music with guitar. I’m DMing you.
Just got BU audition invite for classical music (strings)!
