Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

It’s super annoying to have to wait to buy air/hotel for very specific dates because it means that we don’t have time to wait for deals and can make this already expensive thing even more expensive. I chose to hold miles tickets because they are easily cancellable. Every week I go in and doublecheck prices and have saved a ton of miles so far. Most airlines allow free cancellations now, but only for credit, so if there’s an airline that you use a lot and don’t mind potentially having money locked up with them until you fly again, this would be an option too. And finally, hold the hotels now since most hotels are held for free and cancellable, at least on Booking (but make sure because some aren’t).

Yes, I just went through my son’s list and checked all of the “last day of school”, “jury dates” and “grades posted” dates to see when the professors may have some time to look through the videos. Just so you know many of those dates pointed to around DEC 18. So it makes sense that most have not let our kiddos know yet. Can’t handle the suspense!

so glad to hear it’s not just me! I am seriously obsessing and I’m not even sure why. But I feel like I can’t “not refresh” the emails every time I walk by my laptop, 100,000 times a day LOL. Any advice on how to not care and just wait for them to start rolling in is greatly appreciated:/

Most of the schools have special discounts for visiting families staying in nearby hotels. Use links from school admissions/visit pages of their websites or just mention school name to a hotel representative when you book. Saved us some on auditions travel.

There are so many factors that went into how we ended up with the list we applied to, but my son ended up choosing to apply to Eastman, Thornton, Colburn, Oberlin, and University of Ottawa. We’re waiting on pre screens now (no pre screen at uOttawa).
For my son, there are distinct positives to each program he’s interested in and he’s looking forward to auditions to get the best feel for which places seem like the best fit. It also comes down to finances (which seem impossible to predict).
@RangerDanger9, where is your child applying?

Does anyone know if music schools tend to release acceptances first and then rejections for prescreens? We haven’t heard from BU yet (same instrument as Kpatterson who heard last night) so I’m wondering if that’s a sign. I’m also noticing that no one else posted BU results yesterday. Not sure if that’s because no one here is waiting for BU results, or if no one else has heard yet either?

On a different note, I’m surprised we haven’t heard from Jacobs yet! Last year people started hearing by 12/8, and it seemed like by 12/13 everyone had heard. Other schools released results closer to Christmas, but I was hoping for IU earlier!

I saw a masters voice applicant post yesterday that she got a BU invite, but I’m not sure if that has anything to do with undergrad strings. We also applied for the Trustee Scholarship there, so we are forced into the early audition date on Jan 17. (not ideal…)

Like everything else in this process, there is a lot of variability. So take these thoughts with that in mind and based on our experiences.

It is not uncommon for grad school applicants to have a different timeline. Generally they will hear sooner than undergrad.

A studio will generally release acceptances/rejections at the same time (or at least close to the same time)

Different studios in the same school can have very different release dates. So don’t be surprised if the cello applicants have results and the violinists are still waiting.

It is very common to get prescreen results as late as 3-4 weeks before the live audition date. Know that the faculty and school really are not trying to torture you, though I know it feels that way. They have so much to do on their end!

It seems that the release dates for prescreen decisions vary from year to year. This likely depends on the number of applications and know that sometimes the faculty will have changed in a studio and they have a different process or timeline.

Hugs to everyone and hang in there!

I’m not sure if this plays into it, but IU’s fall semester ended a week earlier last year. They are still in session this year. So professors are probably behind last year’s schedule a bit.

Just got email from BU. My son didn’t get an audition.

BU, due to the BUTI Tanglewood program, probably has a bit more competition than some other big “universities” given all those BUTI kids that then go and apply to BU. We know a bunch of them. Good luck on your other spots!

Im sorry to hear that. Keep your chin up

My son (BME-Voice) got his prescreen results from Vanderbilt (no) on Monday and Jacobs (yes!) yesterday

An early “no” can cause a lot of bad feelings. Like…omg…what were we thinking??? That’s my go-to thought. That’s normal. Don’t go there…yet. It’s not over with ONE result.

My 30 something “kid” had a very bad audition season this spring to summer. So yes, it never goes away. Some winds shifted in peoples plans…and she got her best contract to-date in the fall. Even though she no longer lives with me…of course I know, with laser focus, when something is not going well for her. I had to walk around for a couple of months thinking…do not despair…keep the faith…ignore it, ignore it, ignore it…and just WAIT and WAIT and WAIT for some good news. If I could do it for a few months (when my kid has mortgage to pay…lol), you can do it for a few days or weeks. But it’s a drag!!!

@Violinistmom - Advice for dealing with the waiting. Try to distract yourself…truly. You may only succeed 10% of the time…but try to stretch that a bit each day. If your kid stays in music…for many this will be your first experience with a lifetime of…waiting…

Hang in there…and go for a walk!

Edit: a perfect time to see a “no” and a “yes”. Very common for prescreens.

We heard from IU 12/11 but like someone else said, it is likely different for different studios.

it just wasn’t meant to be. make sure your son knows that there are so many other factors that come into play (such as professors having previous relationships with students/private lessons/alumni and many more) and so it doesn’t reflect on his ability and just have faith that it happened for a reason. Your son will end up at the school that is perfect for him.

It is. Terribly. Stressful.

Especially because he is currently happy and thriving, which makes considering alternatives feel like a waste of time(to him, not me) that eats into his current experience and musical goals.

Thank you.

It actually has worked out, until the fabulous teacher proffered his resignation. Doubt that replacement will be as good.

Thanks. He isn’t looking for a mid-year transfer. The teacher is giving plenty of notice so that the school can find a replacement. Some schools are accepting even though they had Dec 1st dates, others allow transfers to skip pre-screens.

There are a few with January deadlines.

And Prescreens are usually waived for BUTI kids.
