Yes. It may not matter but can’t hurt so why not.
Also, if your child knows someone in the studio they’re applying to, or has direct contact to the professor of that studio, you may want to send them an email to share the proud achievement.
I would if it helps her candidacy. Like National Merit Finalist, for example?
Sometimes schools waive prescreen requirements if a student has been recognized by particular organizations. MSM, for example, waives prescreens for YoungArts, NYO Jazz, and Next Gen Jazz winners. But not Brubeck… go figure.
HS councilors sometimes say that one of the only reasons to contact a school directly is to inform them of such honors. Some applications have ways to edit some information sections to reflect new info like this.
My D (BME-Voice) passed prescreens for IU and BU. Waiting on UMich SMTD and a few others. Anyone know when SMTD sends out prescreen results?
Congrats! My son is waiting on SMTD too. Judging by past years, it will most likely be tomorrow. Why is this so stressful?
So much worse than when my first 2 kids just applied and waited for decisions.
This is my first rodeo and I’m so overwhelmed. Luckily my second child is not into music.
I have a sticky note over my desk which has a reminder I wrote to myself:
“Embrace the Uncertainty”
Hello, Lovely People, son just got an audition for percussion at IU!!!
My DD received an email from Jacobs last week with her prescreening results of congratulations! 2 days ago she received another congratulations from BU. Yesterday she received her first rejection from Rice, although she is not devisted as that was her reach school and didn’t even know anyone at the faculty for viola.
She is still waiting on 7 other schools.
Her sister attends Jacobs (is a sophomore this year) so I am very familiar with the stress music students have, although Jacobs was the only school my college sophomore daughter applied to!
That’s what I said …until she chose Nursing…Talk about competitive LOL!
What department is your sophomore Jacobs daughter in? I have a freshman daughter there in Voice.
That is basically what music is,that is a great philosophy. Because music is such an opaque path , there really isn’t much certainty in it.
In piano performance
My daughter got an audition invitation from Jacobs this morning, so that’s two so far (Jacobs and UNT). Still waiting on 5 more!
S got a U MI (Ann Arbor) audition invite phew
Check your kid’s Juilliard portal if they applied. Mine didn’t get an email, but there is now a link at the top to confirm the audition date = passed prescreen.
Congratulations on all the good news. Just in case it makes your DD feel better, let her know that my son has visited and then kept in close contact with both viola professors at Rice for 2.5 years, so she should not judge her abilities based on not passing pre-screenings. I believe that much more goes into it, such as already knowing the students, or what school they are coming from (for instance a music boarding school or pre-juilliard) etc… Don’t let it get her down. And we know a few music kids that went to IU and they LOVE it! It’s a great school!
So my kid isn’t coming from any pre college program and hasn’t had any contact with any teachers at Rice. Should I encourage him to set up a lesson now? Or ask if he can have a lesson in person when he is there to audition? Or after audition? We are so lost.
Hi, the sooner you contact the teacher the better. Whether your kid has an online lesson or in person clearly depends on how far you are from Rice. I’m speaking as a spouse to someone that teaches at a different conservatory but their day job is a major orchestra. Generally he will do everything in his power to help a kid schedule a lesson, if he has a few weeks (or couple of months) notice. If a kid contacts and says, “I’ll be in your city this week visiting / auditioning can I schedule a lesson?” It drives him nuts because he wants to hear the kid play but realistically he will not have room in his schedule on that short notice. It does help to get a lesson in advance. There was a high school senior that contacted and set up a lesson via zoom about a month before their in person audition a couple years ago and after the zoom lesson he thought the kid might not be at the playing level needed based on the lesson but on the day of the audition it was clear the student had worked specifically on the things he suggested. He was impressed that the kid took the feedback seriously and implemented it. He accepted the kid and called after the audition to personally compliment the work they put in and congratulate (the kid joined his studio).
