And always pay extra for Priority Boarding ($15-$30) if you aren’t in the earlier boarding groups. Last time, they didn’t have Priority Boarding available to purchase so we asked at the gate if they could let him on early because of his instrument and they bumped him up.
I love the part on how to carry it on such that it is less likely to be spotted by the flight attendants.
Reminds me of sneaking “outside food” into the movie theater.
This is why my kid is so happy he plays the oboe.
Also know that if TSA requests to open your case, you can respectfully ask to open and close it for them. They do not have to oblige your request. My son flies almost monthly now. He says he has only had his case opened for inspection twice in the past 6 years.
My son heard from Oberlin yesterday for cello.
What instrument does your son play? Mine is jazz piano and still waiting on UCLA
Jazz piano too. Waiting on Oberlin, Northwestern, UMich (BM Performance and Technology), and SUNY Purchase.
Where else did your son apply?
Would be so nice to hear before the holiday…
If it means anything, there were 6 total piano slots made available for reservation on the UCLA acceptd scheduling site yesterday
Still waiting on Oberlin and NYU… and Purchase
Only heard from BU. Still waiting Eastman, Oberlin and Northwestern and Bard.
Also Oberlin and Northwestern plus Eastman, Jacobs and UNC. Already accepted at U of South Carolina. FYI I came across this job posting for a jazz piano faculty position at Oberlin the other day.
Adam Birnbaum at Purchase is a special human being, plays every Monday night at the Village Vanguard with half of the Purchase faculty.
Oh interesting…
Good luck and fingers crossed everyone hears some good news today.
I’ve heard nothing but good things about that place. As NY residents it would be nice and affordable too.
I’m sorry to hear that, Northwestern is a tough one to get into. One of two violists that we know heard back from Oberlin already. I’ve heard it’s an awesome school.
On a recent small plane, all carry on’s were told to be tagged and checked at the gate because the plane was too small. I told them that per FAA rules, a violin case must be allowed on if there’s space. The gate agent told me, sorry, this plane does not have space for any carryon’s. Once onboard, I saw that even though the overhead bins were very small, and most carryon’s might not have fit, a violin case would have. AND I saw many people that had ignored the gate agent and still brought carryon’s onboard. This was on AA. While waiting, I asked Delta and UA agents and they “said” that they would not have done that but that I should avoid CRJ-900’s because they not only do not have regular sized overhead bins, but they don’t even have closets for storing instruments. I was also warned though, that airlines often change the aircraft type and so you aren’t guaranteed the aircraft that you booked.
Does anyone have experience with traveling with cymbal bags? They are really big so don’t think they can fit in overhead or under the seat. But we definitely don’t want to check them.
I suggest that you have your musician carry a copy of the FAA rules regarding musical instruments. Most musicians I know do this.
D25 BM Vocal Performance - More prescreen results came in yesterday (12/19). Passed for UCLA and University of Colorado.
MM voice soprano- passed Peabody for both opera and historical performance!
Still waiting on 5 schools/6 programs….
We are only waiting on Michigan now.
Same. What are they waiting for?
