The Amtrak train is another good option from Detroit to Chicago. I live in Chicago area. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. My son is Jazz too!
Same situation – SMTD hit max number of attendees. Did you have luck emailing and getting a day? I’m worried they will take our delayed signup as lack of interest. Do you think there’s risk of that happening?
Do you already have an audition at DePaul? My son is working on his prescreen now and plans to turn it in this week. If you already have an audition I’m wondering how long it took them to get back to you after the prescreen? Need to make reservations! Thanks!
Don’t worry. They will know you have been offered an audition. These administrative glitches happen, especially at very large programs with many applicants. Just email music admin. They will likely be fielding lots of emails on Monday.
Hi there! Where did you find this info about UMich? My son got an audition but I’m worried they won’t ultimately accept him due to GPA, so your post gave me some hope. Are you certain that accepting him for audition is a signal that academics are considered acceptable? He is 3.7 uw. Thank you so much for listening!
Hi, they told us last year at one of the presentations on audition day that if we were there for an audition, that they had also passed the academic bar, so they only send out one acceptance from SMTD. If you’re admitted there, you were already cleared from the university as a whole.
I’ll confirm what @Linda_Anne said, but it is a little different if your student is applying for a dual degree involving another school at UMich. Otherwise, I wouldn’t worry. IU is one school that I remember that does do a separate academic admission from your audition results. That was last year, so I can’t speak to their policies this year.
Yes. I’ve had 3 at Jacobs. All three had a separate academic admissions from audition. One as recently as last year. I’ll share this info because I feel it can be generalized to some other campuses. The link below shows the stats for this year’s IU Bloomington freshman class, but that shouldn’t scare anyone off. While my oldest had a pretty stellar high school academic record, my second had a 3.02 (unweighted) and only 3 of the 4 “required” semesters of world language. My youngest (part of this class at the link) had a 3.67 (unweighted)–below what they consider their range. IU Bloomington is divided up into several schools/programs – Kelley (business), Luddy (STEM), Jacobs (music), Arts and Sciences, etc – and each apparently has its own expectations and admissions standards. I know that Kelley and Luddy are definitely pulling up that average GPA. So just know that some colleges may have separate admissions and auditions acceptances but still consider the school/program to which you are applying–my second would have never in a million years been considered for other programs at IU like Kelley or Luddy, but he can play a mean jazz guitar, compose like a king, and school you on music history:). This website says the average GPA for SMTD at UMich is 3.76, so your son’s seems pretty on the mark to me! Admissions Statistics - University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance
Yes, my son got an invite to audition there on Dec. 17. I think he finished that application a month earlier. Sounds like a strong option for jazz with a lot of recent funding for its music department. At a college fair for music programs we heard that students need a 3.0 GPA to get into U Mich STMD as long as they have great auditions
DePaul shows a music school deadline of December 1… was your son able to get an extension? My son had changed his mind about Chicago and was wondering about DePaul.
edit* dug deeper and found jan 6 date… sry
I can’t speak to Umich or any specific school (and they all vary), but the general impression I get is with kids applying to the music school in universities, that as long as they have decent academic stats and the music school wants to admit the candidate, they will get in, even if their academics are not as high as a typical academic admit. Obvious caveats here, if a kid is doing dual degree this may not apply , what is acceptable may vary from school to school, or even from year to year, and that doesn’t mean a school will admit a kid with a 2.5 when they usually admit kids with 3.8 or something like that. It is just that for music students they likely will not be as stringent as for academic admits IME/what I have heard and seen.
Okay, great! Thank you! I’m excited about the school. We ruled it out very early on because I didn’t know what I was doing but then recently took another look and it looks like a good fit. Good luck to your son!
Yes! They extended it to January 6th.
This is our firsthand experience as well
HI! I’d love to ask you about the Hutton honors program and music. Trying to decide whether to encourage my son to complete that application, coming up due Jan 1, or let it go. Can you speak to how it works for a music major to add that in? Does it add much extra work, and is scheduling a problem? I see one of the dorms is close to the music school. Thanks!
when did you get your oberlin invite to audition? still waiting to hear from Oberlin at my house. i’m sure it varies by instrument, but just curious. Waiting to hear about percussion.
Hi! We were told this by a member of the Michigan admissions staff during a presentation at a music conference there about 2 years ago. They were really clear about it, and their stance stood out to me because I I know how difficult it is to basically have to worry about two admissions on both the music and the academic sides of a program.
I know it’s nowhere on the SMTD website but hopefully it’s still a policy. It sounds like your student’s GPA is right in the hit zone if not above for music. Maybe you can call and confirm?
Hi there,
Our daughter is a freshman at Peabody/Hopkins, and she has a friend who just transfered from there and had a bad experience. If your child would like more information, I can talk more to our daughter.
Let me know!
