Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

ooo good tip, thanks!! we have U Mich followed the next 2 days at Chicago schools!

HI! We have similar schools coming in/up! have you gotten an update on Eastman?

He got the prescreen results on the 12/20 and then got the actual audition date on 12/26 but I think only prospective jazz students are assigned audition dates because they’re putting auditioners into combos. Everyone else is able to select audition dates.

I agree, the best thing you can do if you are worried is to call and ask, that is what the admissions department staff are there for too (and I have run into very few who are nasty, other than if dealing with a parent who is obnoxious). If you think about it, scheduling auditions is not easy on their part, why would they extend an offer to audition to a student they didn’t think would be accepted academically, it would just add to the scheduling burden of the audition process. That doesn’t mean that sometimes students may get an audition and get turned down academically, but it isn’t likely they would set up a system where they waste time on a student auditioning they know won’t get in academically.

Again, I encourage calling and asking:)

Dm’g you

Does anyone know how long the audition day is at U Mich? some schools seem to have all day events/programming, while some it’s just your warm up plus 15 minute slot. TIA!

Here is what I remembered last year about my son’s experience two years ago. I’m not sure how much has changed.

Anybody knows what to expect at Shepherd on audition day?

You’ll receive a detailed itinerary of the day. My son had a very early audition, a break, and then studio lesson as the above poster mentioned. This was last year’s audition. They did not have a lunch though. This was for viola.

My son’s experience from two years ago:
There’s a check-in desk, someone led him to a practice room, someone came to the practice room and took him to the audition room that was a classroom. There were two professors he knew and someone else he didn’t know. After audition he went with his friends (current students at the time) to explore the building then hang out. He didn’t pay attention if there was organized tour. Knowing Rice (my daughter went there), I believe there were students ready to take the perspectives on a campus tour.
Three years ago, one of my students had a very similar audition experience. He was invited to tour the campus after audition.
Houston weather is unpredictable in late January to mid February. It could be anywhere between 40 and 80 degrees. If you have time to tour the campus and rice village, you’ll want to change into comfy clothes after audition.
Good luck.

Hi,
Looking for info on the experience at Peabody for my son (jazz). He is interested in studying music, taking some classes at JHU (premed classes), but not doing a dual degree. How feasible is this? JHU is a fantastic school for premed, but I heard that Peabody students have limited access to JHU.
Thank you!

I would suggest contact peabody about that. Theoretically your son could major in music performance and take the required classes for pre med (since pre med is not a degree), the chemistry, biology, math, physics and so forth at JHU. The only thing is they may not allow that, that he might have to dual degree (BA/BS in something with pre med concentration courses, BM at peabody).

They allow couple of courses at JHU since they have something called Directed Studies Minor.

Has anyone been through Eastman’s audition day (specifically vocal performance) and know how it is structured? We were able to choose a date, but they said that she needs to be available from 9 am to 8 pm. We are hoping to audition at Carnegie Mellon (assuming she passes prescreens - still haven’t heard back from that one) the next day, which is about a 4.5 hour drive, so I’m hoping she’ll get a daytime audition time and not have to wait until 8 pm to leave Rochester. I’m curious if they will assign her a time closer to the date, or if we will just have to show up at 9 am on audition day to find out when she will sing.

Also, for those who have gone through the audition process at some of these schools, do they usually have practice rooms available to warm up, etc prior to auditioning? Since we’ll be staying in a hotel the night before, it would be nice to know that there are practice rooms available. I know at Oberlin they had them available prior to the Richard Miller competition last month, so I would assume they would also have them for audition days…

I have been through this process with 2 vocalists and a jazz guitarist. Every school where they auditioned had practice rooms available for warming up.

This is not specific to Eastman but every school (except Curtis) where my son auditioned he was given a specific time slot. I recall at least one where we needed to change the time slot and the school was able to accommodate our request.
Curtis auditions in rounds, much like a professional audition. So for many studios, everyone shows up in the morning for the preliminary round, then there are callbacks for semifinals and/or finals.

There are always practice/warmup rooms.

Yes, there are practice rooms available for warming up at Oberlin! You’ll probably see my son- he works the auditions. We were also at the Richard Miller competition (same weekend as the opera this year!). Such great talent! I watched the final round and was so impressed. (Mine was the one who sang while the judges were discussing).

Oh, he was fabulous! My daughter was a 3rd place winner (she tied with another singer). The tall brunette mezzo-soprano in the red dress

Who does your son study with? My daughter has had lessons with Jolly, Champagne, and LeFebvre, and loved Jolly and Champagne. I think she put Champagne down as her first choice, but it was a tough decision because she really liked both of them for different reasons.

Your daughter is terrific, congrats!

He studies with Champagne and absolutely loves him. But she can’t go wrong!
