Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

It’s worse than a human ticket because you have to pay extra for a window seat. :grimacing:

Basses have to pay $200-300 extra per flight depending on airline just to get it thrown around in checked luggage… I wish colleges could do more video or zoom auditions or even make some regional stops so that we could drive to all auditions. Some are just too far unfortunately and would take a week+ off of school and work in order to go there and back.

How do pre-screens work for students applying for composition majors?
Thanks

My S25 also got an audition at CCM yesterday(percussion)! Does anyone have a familiarity with CCM? With percussion there? Thank you. Looking for more information.

Son also got a call back to an audition weekend for a DCI drum corp in the midst of all these auditions. I’m happy for him, but it’s a lot, like everyone understands on this thread.

Congratulations to all those who have received good news, and to those who haven’t - those decisions do not define you as a person or a musician!

Great! What instrument? We are waiting on CMU for BXA. Did they notify you by regular email?

Juilliard prescreen pass received today.

Composition students send a portfolio of work, preferably with some live recordings. This is one reason summer programs can be so helpful for young composers- they get live performances. (Check out Walden School in Dublin NH which focuses on composition and has world-class musicians, as well as interesting classes, mountain hikes.)

Any other instruments passed Juilliard prescreen also?

Note that my son is a Master’s applicant so the timeline might be different.

I did see some VP applicants including undergrad have received prescreen results.

Frost prescreen pass received today (tenor sax/jazz/undergrad) but with a single date offered, which doesn’t work… audition might have to be remote

Curious as to where your violist passed. My violist is still waiting on a couple schools.

One thing for all of you waiting for pre screen results and audition dates, I know how nerve wracking it is (and as the parents of music students and musicians it never ends). Please try not to take anything out of delays, or hearing how other schools have already heard, or that at School X the bassoon players already have heard so why haven’t violin applicants heard. It is not necessarily a linear thing, I have seen where a kid on an instrument at school Y heard back with a pass, while other kids were still waiting. Even with modern technology, this time of year music schools are kind of like tax preparation firms and accountants in tax season, they are flooded. Some schools do a better job than others, also the size of the program may have something to do with it. A school with a name on violin might be flooded with pre screens and it takes a long time to go through it, or scheduling audition dates may be problematic (somehow I suspect they aren’t using logistics support systems that match students against teachers available on dates to be on the panel).

I know it likely won’t make the waiting period any easier, but try not to take anything out of not getting a response yet, or getting a pass but no audition dates, it kind of is the nature of the beast and departments within a school, or between schools, can be night and day different.

Yes, reading the tea leaves is certainly hard to resist. Been there, done that.

I remember many years ago a parent on here said…when your kid’s faith is shaken…you need to believe for them. Sometimes as a parent, the best thing you can do is step away from all the details (on occasion…not always…that would be impossible!) and just BELIEVE in your kid. You don’t have to believe that they will get in X school…just that they will meet this challenge, find the right school/program and go on to have a happy life.

You need to keep the faith for them over the next few months (at least in front of them…what you do behind a closed door to cope after a rejection is your own business). With your unconditional support, they’ll do just fine.

Have any voice students heard from Peabody about scheduling auditions? I got the pass back in December but still can’t sign up for an audition date/time…

Do your children practice in hotel rooms? Mine will be on the road for a week. How to practice?
