Anyone out there at UMich for a percussion audition this weekend?

Anyone hear from Frost yet? My son is at school so I don’t know what his status is, but kids are posting results for ED and EA.

I believe if he is accepted through SMTD he’s in. We were told at last year’s UMich audition that if you got an audition that you would be admitted if you are admitted through SMTD. I heard many, many OOS students go to the deferred list EA.

In the past, particularly at Frost, I have seen kids often deferred for ED or EA until everyone has auditioned. Yes, some do get accepted. It may depend on talent and/or studio and/or need at the school. But deferrals are common…until after all auditions are done.

I just want to point out that a deferral or waitlist at a music school can be different from a regular academic admission decision…where a deferral or waitlist may mean…rejection. That is not true for many music students. They just want to see the whole pool of applicants. No guarantee…but a deferral can happen and the acceptance will come with the other acceptances later.

Did anyone audition at UMich today for viola performance? I have a question if you did :relieved:

Have any voice applicants heard back about Curtis prescreens yet?

He was deferred from Frost. Not too surprised

S also deferred. Bass friend admitted (one of three auditioning that day), piano friend deferred. It says on the Frost website that most kids are deferred. He’s in the audition room at UCLA right now.

No safeties!

I mentioned about the kids who do academics UG then go to grad school. But most of the kids I am talking about used pre college music as a means to an end, and they didn’t study music at all UG, they didn’t get a BA in music, they got a degree in something “useful” and went on with that, and dropped music as soon as they could. I am pretty sure of what I am saying because my son knew the kids and then saw what they did after pre college. He said some of it was sad, there were kids who would love to do music but their parents would never let them, and then when they graduated felt too duty bound to do the ‘right thing’, not music. Some kids bucked the trend, as I think I wrote, and then do music in grad school.

I can’t talk about every situation, but waitlist can also mean the student passed the audition but the teacher is up in the air because the teachers that the student indicated either didn’t have room in their studio or didn’t want to teach them. it is not uncommon, if there are other faculty then what happens is the student is waitlisted until they find a teacher there they want to study with/will take them (obviously if there are 2 teachers and neither is available, you are kind of out of luck).

Same here. Have not heard from NYU yet (jazz).

There were questions previously regarding accompanist requirements. My daughter (a violist) called all 7 schools she is auditioning for. Here is what she found out (or didn’t find out)

BU- yes, you are required to have an accompanist. They will assign you one after you send over the scanned score. You get no prior practice with accompanist.

CIM- No accompanist required

SFCM- No accompanist required

Peabody- not required, but can request. DD said they seemed to discourage accompanist, but said if it was very important they could get one.

Eastman- No accompanist

CMU- did not get ahold of someone

Jacobs- didn’t get a hold of anyone, but recalls that yes, an accompanist is required. (Her sister - a pianist -is at Jacobs and is going to see if she can accompany her)

Also, schools/teachers/studios with grad students can have an extra layer of complexity. When my D auditioned for grad school, she did audition at her school as well as others. Her teacher knew she would “probably” leave…but she still needed to get offers and merit. So she couldn’t make her final decision until after auditions. So her teacher didn’t know if she would have another spot or not…meaning talent had to wait. And yes, wait lists move in music programs! Seen it many times.

When my D auditioned many moons ago, I don’t remember EA or ED. It seems to have become more popular recently. I think that it has to be very difficult for the schools. I would guess that they would want to see all talent before making most offers. But more and more schools are doing it…and then deferring…making people feel bad (needlessly).

I would view a deferral as…a bummer that you didn’t get in early…but a positive in that you weren’t rejected. If your audition felt good, it probably was! You were simply deferred as most kids are until more auditions are done. So…stay hopeful! It could still work out!

Anybody have any idea when we can hear back from NYU? Previous Experiences?

From what we can tell, they viewed my son’s prescreen video today (based on view count). So hopefully we will hear soon!
Do you know if NYU does an academic screen before they offer audition?

Thanks! I’m pretty sure they do it after, academic screen that is, btw though I am the student applying. I wanna say they viewed mine on the 30th of December or the 15th of January, don’t exactly know lol
