Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

Hi! My daughter is a second-year VP conservatory student and is very happy with her choice. (1) I have not heard anything about any sexual misconduct (but will ask my daughter). My daughter feels very safe on campus - even when she is walking at night. (2) My daughter received a large music scholarship which made Bard a cheaper option than our state public school options. (3) It is true that there is a lot of partying at Bard. My daughter is not interested at all (she is very protective of her voice) and has felt absolutely no pressure to join in. (4) The 1,200-acre campus can feel very big and kids really need a bike to get around (to avoid having to wait for a shuttle). If your kid does not like the country, it might not be a great choice for them. However, it is easy to take a shuttle to one of the adorable collar towns (Red Hook, Rhinecliff and Tivoli) - coffee shops, consignment shops, restaurants, grocery and drug stores. On Saturdays, my daughter frequently goes into Kingston on their weekend shuttle to shop (the shuttle drops them at Target/Walmart/Sam’s Club which is also an easy walk to restaurants). The train station in Rhinecliff can take kids in NYC, and a lot of music students (mainly grad students) routinely go into the city for lessons, shows, etc. (5) The “depressing” vibe of the school is probably limited to winter time (although it is pretty in the snow), but the spring and fall are glorious. If you go to visit, check out Zabriskie’s Waterfall and Blithewood Garden. There is a lot of music, theatre and special events on campus, much of it student-run. My daughter told me recently that they have just renovated their athletic facilities. (6) Bard College has an A- financial rating, higher than a lot of more prestigious LACs (e.g., Vassar has a B+). My daughter has had no issues at all with signing up for classes. Her dorm is very close to the Fisher Center and (pretty randomly) happens to have a row of music practice rooms available only to music students. Once the new dorms open next year (very close to my daughter’s current dorm), there should be plenty of housing - they looked like they will be really nice when I saw them last weekend. The only thing I can think to add is that one of Bard’s early college programs, Simon’s Rock in Barrington, MA, is moving its campus to Bard (but I don’t think they have a ton of students). My daughter complains that the food at Bard is not good (although Bard has its own farm), but they have a Halal Bros. on campus, as well as a student-run coffeehouse. Feel free to reach out in DM if you have any questions!

Anybody heard anything from NYU Jazz? Got notification that prescreen was received last Friday, and they said they would follow up in about a week.

You can take the Wolverine up to Annandale.

Same here

Is Frost EA today?

I’ve heard both today and next Friday :grimacing:
It’s usually the last Friday, but some people are saying it’s usually the 4th Friday and this Jan has 5

I read your reply after I wrote/submitted mine. I just wanted to point that out (fwiw) and to say that I thought it was funny how similar our replies were!

So says the Steely Dan song :joy:

I remember the thirty-five sweet goodbyes
When you put me on the Wolverine up to Annandale
It was still September
When your daddy was quite surprised …

Literally with S now on a plane to California for UCLA and USC auditions. Let’s hope it doesn’t tumble into the sea. Although they could use some rain… tomorrow apparently.

Bring some (gentle) rain with you.

Did anybody get an email from U Michigan asking to verify continued interest? Only when he logs in to do it, there is nothing nowhere to verify. He has an audition date confirmed. He applied for regular decision (as all music kids do). We are puzzled.

Is it specifically from SMTD?

No, it’s general from U Michigan. So bizarre. I just checked to see if he somehow managed to apply EA for academics and regular for music, but no, nothing like that. There isn’t even an option like that.

He logged into the status page and it says all materials received. So I am going to assume this is some sort of a mistake and his email got added somehow to EA deferred kids. i don’t know how though.

My son applied EA (OOS) at UMich and just got deferred. Had his SMTD audition last weekend and felt great about it, so it was a bit of a gut punch.

I am sorry.
Mine hasn’t had his audition yet. It’s not until February. Does your portal says deferred anywhere? Ours says regular decision is awaiting and all materials received. I am so confused.

My son got applied EA to UM and got 'Postponed Decision" which means deferred. Yes, click select continued interest if your child is still interested. My son is still waiting for a decision from SMTD for BFA (Trombone) and PAT program. Does PAT require an interview?

Where do you see continued interest button? It’s not in his portal. He hasn’t applied EA he tells me. So strange.

Nmm

This is very helpful. My child is applying places as a transfer and Bard’s cost estimator didn’t even account for a five versus four year program. Knowing the have merit aid makes a big difference…
