Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

What have been some of your son’s experiences?

The best audition so far has been UCLA. His HS sends a few kids to UCLA Global Jazz each year so his friend/former combo member was the piano accompanist for his audition.

The drum professor Dana Hall at DePaul got lots of props from the DePaul admin team for his commitment to his students. S says he was very nice and supportive and the student hosts of the auditions were very welcoming.

The nicest auditioners were at the University of Washington where he really connected with the jazz drum professor. Seemed like the whole department sat in on the audition and they were all very supportive. He’s already been admitted to the music school, waiting on university admission.

Temple and Berklee have been online which cut way back on our travel from the Bay Area, yay!

Just saw on the CCM portal that S was accepted at CCM! BM, double bass. No merit info yet. Has anyone else gotten merit info from them yet? Thanks to those who told me that they usually do notifications on Monday - you were right!

what is your specific major? Jazz Studies will require an audition regardless of prescreen…probably most of the other “performance degrees.” I think for the kids with other majors who didnt have to audition they did require an on campus interview
My son is a Jazz Studies major

My son didn’t make it to the callback at Juilliard. Dealing with rejections like this, especially after intensive preparation, feels like a mourning process with a strong sense of loss. Now I’m back to my regular job, and I can’t stop thinking about how easy it is compared to a musician’s career. I know he will bounce back quickly as he is still young and he has many opportunities ahead of him. Nevertheless, it is just really hard.

I am always surprised by how well my kids bounce back. Once they know, they can get excited about options they actually have and move on. But as a parent, I’m surprised by how much I feel it. It’s like going through it all over again myself, except with wisdom that I think makes me feel it more deeply. 4 years ago, my older son got 6 rejections in a row (engineering, not music) before he finally got an acceptance. Like every other kid who got rejections, he dealt with it, got excited about where he did get in, and is about to graduate after a great experience at a school that fit him really well. Resilience is important, and this is our kids’ chance to learn it. But as a parent, I hate watching it

I think it would be less painful if we were the subject of those rejections rather than our kids, even though we know it’s part of their growth. It’s in our protective nature not to want them to be hurt or let down

hi! i’m doing voice performance

Have you checked your portal in Accept’d? That is where your acceptance will arrive for COM. Did the letterhead you recieved come from COM or UNT? Maybe they dont have lives for straight up vocal performance (although website says they do) because audition days wrapped up a couple weeks ago. I’m really only familiar with Jazz Studies.

here is my undergrad application process so far as a dual major (music performance for clarinet and music education) :

• Ohio State Uni : Accepted on both
• Saint Mary’s College : Accepted (Music Ed. only - no performance degree)
• Central Michigan Uni : Accepted on both
• Western Michigan Uni : Accepted on both
• Michigan State Uni : Accepted in general, still no word back from the college of music

I think the suspense is killing me more than my daughter! I keep checking her email! Others have posted about being admitted already to some schools, but nothing from our list:
Jacobs (still needs to audition, but nothing from IU yet)
CMU
Peabody
CIM
BU
SFCM
Eastman

I remember Peabody result came out after JHU decision last year. It was close to the end of March. Dual degree result should come out along with JHU decision mid March, it did two years ago.

It’s torture!

The wait is definitely torture! Hope you start to hear soon! I can tell you last year Eastman released on one day on March 20th. Previous year I think was March 16th-ish.

Here’s another form of torture, and I’m sure many people have experienced it. I cannot help asking myself: “How do I mentally prepare myself to open a portal that’s most likely contain a rejection letter?”
