I do know of one double major at Mich State (also had electrical engineering) who then went to Rice for grad school music and got a job at a pretty good major orchestra within a year. And also, two undergrads at Rice who both had double majors (computer science and math) ended up getting good paying jobs in symphonies, one at the end of undergrad, and one during first year masters. I think it’s impressive that people are able to do both and am surprised at the amount of kids who, despite double majoring even in a lucrative “other” major, still go to grad school for music.
Mine is music U Mich for music and math. Not sure if he can make it happen. I am looking at requirements and twisting in horror.
Just got CIM acceptance into my kid’s top choice studio! Says financial info comes in a few more days…
D(25 viola BM) got the good news from CIM! (And for those of you who recall my pervious posts, this was the school my D had a memory slip with a remarkable recovery. Maybe it is correct, they are not looking for perfection, rather good tone, intonation, rhythm accuracy etc) Now waiting for Eastman, Peabody, and BU
My daughter just got her CIM acceptance, too!
I’m convinced they do this on Friday at 5pm on purpose, so they don’t have to field any calls or questions until Monday, LOL.
Was hoping for Eastman today, but haven’t seen anything yet.
Looking forward to Oberlin tomorrow!
correction: NYU 3/26
My vocalist daughter got an acceptance to USC! We got the notification last Saturday but she just saw it now ![]()
@mimieliza Thank you so much for this.
Congrats! Was that for undergrad? Did she get an email?
Grad! And it was by email
BU is out! My daughter got in!
My daughter as well. The decision letter said there was a merit award, but the link does not work.
My son is literally one of the top players in his instrument and has stats that match other BU admits plus national and international wins/programs and got denied… not even waitlisted. I have no idea what is going on, but he absolutely should have been accepted. So angry right now…
what instrument? maybe the studio had limited spots?
My son was rejected from BU (he already didn’t pass the prescreen so this was just the academic side, and given other music programs he got into he wouldn’t have gone anyway).
But he was accepted to Oberlin! Both to the college and the conservatory! Hooray!
There are four teachers there… and they definitely had several openings, so that should not be the reason. Even if the guy he put as #1 didn’t have as many, there’s no reason he couldn’t be put with someone else or at least waitlisted. He’s even attended BUTI.
I’m really sorry - that’s so disappointing. It sounds like this was a top choice for him. Does he have other options that he’s excited about?
Since he’s been rejected from 2 of the 5 places he’s applied already and only accepted into one safety, the other two aren’t looking very hopeful, but yes, the other 2 are both good schools.
My son also got into Oberlin dual degree. Unfortunately, the merit aid offered is decidedly underwhelming. Too bad, considering it’s his top choice. But that’s 3 acceptances and 2 rejections with 2 more to go.
Your son can appeal the merit offer and ask them to match another bigger offer (or offers) he’s gotten from other schools. My son did this, and indicated that he would love to commit if they could match so and so offer.
If it’s really his top choice, then he should definitely appeal the offer to try for more. All they can say is no but they often come back with more.
