Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

It would be limiting without a car though there are likely events where multiple students are going and can share a ride or the fee pays enough to cover an uber. There will be a lot of church performances and weddings that pay well.

My jazz drummer son was accepted to USC, yay! Any advice on how and when he can find out who would be his individual instruction teacher if he accepts? It’s key to the decision. Thanks in advance!

Anyone heard from Jacobs on merit yet?

Yes. My S was accepted to TNS Jazz Friday for guitar.

Yesterday, yes, on a Saturday. 12k/yr

Did you get an email? Was it from Jacobs or IU?

That’s great! Is USC his first choice? How did he do at UCLA? Also, S heard from New School (admit $35k) on Friday.

Mine heard middle of last week. $34k

Thanks! USC has been up there for sure but New School is pretty interesting too! He did get into UCLA as did a few kids at his high school. Congratulations to your son on The New School!

Okay,
We are all coming to an end with our school acceptances and now is the time for decisions to be made.
I want to know what you all think are the most important things to consider when deciding where to go ultimately (FOR UG) Would you place the following criteria in order of most important to you when deciding? Why? (Add other criteria I missed.)

Cost of attending (debt??)
Location (opportunities)
Prestige
Teacher
Safety
Beautiful campus/buildings
Weather

I feel like the order you have them listed in is what I would consider as “ranking” criteria. I would not choose a place with significantly higher cost than another option. I might choose one with a slightly higher cost IF it has a much higher prestige. We only applied to schools in cities with major symphonies nearby (hence no IU, Oberlin, etc.) because it’s important to my kid to be able to attend high level performances. Depending on your intended career path, prestige could matter. Resume rounds for major orchestras definitely can discriminate, so that’s a major consideration for us as well.

I did something like this for my D. I made a super cool spreadsheet with similar items. But I gave them different weight…maybe teacher and cost were a higher weight than prestige or weather. It did make me realize I was giving more weight to prestige in my head. I showed my most excellent work to my D…she rolled her eyes and picked the school based on her interaction with the teacher and the curriculum that she liked best. All her schools were priced in a range of acceptable to us. But it helped me! You could add curriculum…

Curriculum/program number one for sure which brings in location. For jazz, if you want to be a part of the most important jazz scene in the world, you find the program in NYC that suits you. Western Michigan has a great jazz program, and a student could play at a pretty high level and get better, but might be more challenged to break into the NYC scene after graduation than someone who went to MSM, Rutgers, Paterson, M. State, Purchase, etc, etc, etc. ESPECIALLY since those faculty play in NYC regularly.

Program
Location
Teacher (faculty)
All the rest

We used a matrix board instead of a spreadsheet… every visit and interaction added a data point.

As far as IU, it depends on how you look at symphony opportunities. No, there may not be a major large city symphony to go listen to nearby, but there are several smaller, quite stellar professional symphonies within a 90 minute drive–Evansville, Terre Haute, Columbus, Indianapolis and its suburbs–that are made up of a large percentage of Jacobs instrumentalists. So if your kid wants paid playing opportunities to supplement the resume and the pocketbook there are several to choose from. And I know that some of these instrumentalists are undergrads…

For my son it was:
Teacher
Location/Opportunities
Cost
Prestige
Safety
Beautiful campus and weather weren’t a factor
