Class of 30 Undergrad/Class of 28 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

Each school is different. Maybe your son can ask his friends a year or two ahead of him what they provided? Maybe ask the music teacher? If it’s public school, it is in the school’s interest to avoid giving students absences - headcount decides funding amount.

Oberlin auditions (at least for strings) are unaccompanied. The only ones I’m aware of with accompanists: Curtis & Juilliard require accomp. BU provides accomp.

We found that all of the schools my kids auditioned at were completely prepared for this. All we had to do was ask at the main desk in the office of each music school, and they had one personalized and ready for us in seconds. One school–I can’t remember which–actually included a letter she could take back to school in the packet they handed my kid when she checked in for her audition.

We booked a room at Kawada Hotel for Colburn, which looks (online) small, nice and minimal. According to map about 15 min. walking. Cheaper than alternatives. We decided I will meet her at LAX for this one to smooth the way.

For Thornton she will go by herself. Any thoughts on best and safe way from LAX to Thornton,? She is used to UBER, just don’t know cost compared to shuttles etc.. Mostly want it to be simple for her.

Hopefully someone else can chime in who has navigated from LAX to USC recently.

Since we live here, I am not familiar with the ground transportation. In other words, I am the Uber driver.

I’m pretty sure there is a dedicated Uber lot to pick up your ride next to Terminal 1. I think Uber would be less complicated than finding the correct shuttle but I am not sure.

Not that you mentioned it as an option, but I do not recommend the metro. While it may generally be safe, I would not want a teenager unfamiliar with the area riding alone and with expensive belongings.

Be advised that LAX is under construction to prepare for the 28 Olympics and is if possible even more confusing than it’s usual state.

I’m happy to be a local contact for your daughter. Just message me.

It’s a private school but there haven’t been many students that were ahead of him that auditioned like this so it’s really hard to ask them. I’m not sure if his music teacher would know.

That gives me a ton of hope! Thank you!

We are flying to LAX next weekend for USC and planning on Ubering.

Daughter’s audition is on the morning of the 31st.

My son’s is on Sunday 2/1. I think it was the ONLY day that they offered Jazz Guitar.

Who else is waiting on EA decisions from UM Frost?

After I called we got an acceptance to Temple the next day or two. But what I’ve gathered on these internet streets, is that admissions staff are understaffed, which is why so many have been deferred or haven’t heard anything. Our letter of acceptance was very plain. Anyway, no doubt you’re getting in.

Any lurkers going to USC this weekend?

Hoping this is a weekend without auditions for your musicians. Or at least auditions requiring flights. Travel will be a challenge with the storms for at least a large part of the country. Stay safe everyone!

For us we are about to start our audition-season travel, it won’t calm down for us again until the beginning of March.

So for fun….if you are traveling or have a child traveling this week for an audition where are they headed to???

Us…We fly from South Florida to Detroit on Thursday for my son’s audition at Michigan State on Friday. Then we fly from Detroit to LA on Saturday for his audition at USC Thorton on Sunday. Then a red-eye home. Fun times!

USC the day before you. She’ll fly home the following weekend and I will drive her to Eastman and Oberlin.

We made the drive to l.a. (USC) this weekend, making good time in both directions 5.5 hours both directions. She came out smiling, so yay! The 3 voice teachers and one more were in the room, plus three students making up the combo. The audition was her first time counting off a band and she only made one mistake for one song, forgetting to tell them how many times through.

We don’t have to travel until Peabody! But she has Berklee before that, but luckily they are coming here. And she got word last week she passed Cal State Long Beach’s prescreen, but they only have one day of auditions and it’s the day we leave for Peabody. Hopefully, they will allow a virtual audition.

Wishing you all low key, fruitful auditions this week!

We are supposed to head to Vanderbilt (Blair) this weekend for my son’s first audition, but Nashville was hit hard by an ice storm. We’re waiting to hear if things are happening as scheduled. Sounds like a lot of locals are still without power, and some are staying in hotels just to have a warm place to be.

Eeek! Keep us posted! Hope you find out soon. Are you supposed to fly or drive?
