Class of 30 Undergrad/Class of 28 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

Scroll back 4 days on this thread and there was a discussion about this. I know some people on the Vocal Performance Parents FB page said they received CCM prescreening results on January 5th. I guess they are releasing them in batches???

We have not heard anything back from CCM also applied EA vocal performance

Has anyone’s student who is auditioning at Eastman or Oberlin received an accompanist contact list?

How might we expect this to be communicated or find online?

The auditions may be unaccompanied.

All of my son’s auditions (classical winds) were without accompaniment except for Juilliard.

I know strings sometimes have accompaniment, but more often not.

Thanks. The first school she auditions at Thornton had sent a list… but sounds like she can do others (except Colburn and Juilliard.) Daughter is at a distance at school, so makes it even harder to juggle details.

re: IU, my son has music first choice, luddy second choice major, although he intends on doing double major and if he goes to IU, would do the BSOF. but he got admitted as “pre-music”, pending audition. we did tour luddy and a part of the tour, we found out that luddy isn’t like the business school or the music school. if you get admitted to the university, you can major at luddy without a separate admittance.

OK, I’ve read so many of these posts on this forum, and it’s time for me to join in on the fun.

son, double majoring in music performance and data science, concentrating on public schools that have solid music programs, and didn’t apply to any conservatories (so different than some of your talented kiddos). he’s also a clarinet, and he only had one school that required a prescreen. when touring IU, they told us that some instruments simply have more spots because of how many are needed in orchestras and ensembles - hence, less prescreen requirements. we/he also won’t go in debt for any school. so depending on how merit goes (i.e. I don’t have high hopes for umich) it will likely limit the options.

Applications:

  • Jacobs (our in state option)- got into school pre-music; Audition end of Feb; Did virtual private lesson mid-Dec with great feedback
  • Michigan State - got into school pre-music; $28K academic scholarship; Audition 2/20 live; Will be doing private virtual lesson next week
  • CU-Boulder - Submitted recordings 1/16, did virtual interview 1/17, was asked to do a follow up private lesson virtual or live
  • UMich - passed prescreen; Audition 1/23 live
  • UWashington-Seattle - Audition 2/7 live

Did those of you waiting on CCM also check the messages section of your Get Acceptd portal, or just the university’s portal?

We’ve been checking Acceptd, CCM portal, and email—nothing since 12/16 for undergrad Vocal Performance. Any word on your end?

Hi! My son emailed admissions more than a week ago and they also told him he’d passed (yay!) and that they’d check w admissions. Still no portal update since October. What about you guys? I am really hoping Boyer admissions guides central admissions decisions??

My DD (instrumental performance) got her prescreen result (pass) on Jan. 5, but ONLY via a message in Acceptd. No email and nothing in the UC portal.

So we are getting ready to start our gauntlet of audition travel ack! I have a question on how to handle something. Our high school will allow college visits as excused absences, they will even go as far as allow a day of travel too which helps especially when we have to take a Friday off to get to a Saturday audition.

Now onto my question, should we ask beforehand or day-of for a letter proving that he was there for his audition? Not sure if others have already done this or not so figured I’d ask here first to see. It sounds like the actual audition letter won’t be enough and they want actual proof.

How are you all handling this with your kid’s high schools?

Ours will accept the confirmation email from the school. Is guidance not okay with just that?

It sounded like they wanted actual proof that we were physically there.

OUr school had a form that needed to be submitted and signed by the college

The cellists did not have accompanists at Oberlin auditions a few years back

Is it normal to get an email from a music professor after an audition saying that they enjoyed the audition and want to have a trial lesson with the student? My daughter received an email after her voice audition. Is this something that every applicant receives? Just trying not to get hopes up and be heartbroken later if this is not an indication of acceptance.

Hard to say if it is standard procedure for a specific teacher at a specific program. You need not share the school but just saying this may be the case. I personally think it is unlikely.

So in other words, a teacher reached out because they wanted to spend more time with your musician. I would say a good sign.

My advice to all musicians (and parents) is to be cautiously optimistic when something positive happens. Enjoy and make the most out of every opportunity. But also stay as emotionally calm as possible. Because the journey is a roller coaster with so many unknowns and variables that are out of your control.

My kid taught me to very quietly celebrate what might be a good sign, and also quickly brush it off when things don’t go as you hope. That way you save your emotional energy for your music and well being.

And of course, when a big win is achieved (such as a school acceptance or a much anticipated job) you get to celebrate with abandon!

Edited to Add: Hugs of support to all of the parents out there. I was a wreck back when my son was auditioning for schools. At least on the inside. And I would be lying if I said that my heart didn’t hurt a bit now when he has a disappointment with his professional auditions. But over these years I have realized that when one door closes another one opens. And a missed opportunity leads to a success in a different way than what was imagined.

Any thoughts on Hotels near Colburn?

There is an Omni Hotel and a Hilton close by. Check if Colburn has a discount arrangement.
