Class of 30 Undergrad/Class of 28 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

On our first flight home from UNT. Checked our email and there was an email from the guitar professor saying he admitted my son so that makes 6 music schools in his back pocket as we head towards the final 4.

we have come to an agreement that he will be pulling his application from UNF and Temple and will not bother with final auditions at either school.

We will only be home for a little over a day because we head toward Northwestern on Tuesday and then hop over to Oberlin on Thursday.

wow! I wonder which other schools this happens with…So hard to know when you will find out!

I am aware of one teacher who took it very personally that a potential student had requested a trial lesson with a different teacher and refused to work with that student or consider them for their studio. The student ended up choosing a different school altogether.

We heard back from Michigan State super fast but I don’t think that’s the norm

My son had his audition at Bienen yesterday. We were shocked to hear how small their jazz program was. Apparently they have a huge need for rhythm section so he has that on his side. He absolutely loved the campus. It’s his second favorite college campus compared to USC (which is gorgeous).

We are now en route to Cleveland for his audition at Oberlin tomorrow.

3 auditions left to go!!! Almost at the finish line. This surely is exhausting!!!

Have a wonderful trip. S22 (S26 now!) will likely be greeting auditioners with a staff t shirt on. I hope it all goes really well and smoothly!

The Bienen audition experience was incredible. It’s a wonderful program from the building to the faculty to the snacks in the lounges :joy:. The impression they make is very very strong. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

We had originally planned that we would be driving to Rochester right now for his audition slot tomorrow at Eastman followed by a drive to Oberlin the next day… instead he formally accepted his offer at the Royal Academy of Music a few days ago and has respectfully withdrawn from all the US schools and released the other uk offers (uk deadline to accept or release offers was Feb 10). It’s surreal after years of assuming he’d be taking a bunch of college auditions in February and instead he’s already done. We flew back to London mid January for accepted students days at both RAM and RCM which included full days at the schools with tours, meeting students, q&a sessions etc and we stayed almost 2 weeks during which time he had 6 different consultation lessons (3 per school); and connected with one teacher particularly well and by the time we flew back he knew it was where he wanted to go. I asked “what if you get an offer from X Y or Z in the US?” And his answer was still “London”. So now RAM in the studio he preferred is confirmed, dorm room is reserved; other schools are released, up next is student visa process. He had to meet with the Dean of students at his high school to get special exception for all the school days missed (between Uk auditions early Dec plus 2 weeks to revisit in Jan he was over the excused absence limit for the semester) but luckily she was supportive because of the end result. Best wishes to everyone still in the thick of it especially the crew headed to Oberlin this weekend!

We tried to sit in on a Jazz Ensemble rehearsal but couldn’t figure out how to get to the room let alone my son ran into a friend who goes there and I guess is in that group and they rehearsed earlier than the schedule. Other than that it was a great experience there for sure.

We walked by it. I’ll keep that in mind for breakfast tomorrow

Congratulations! So happy for you that he found the right fit (and mercifully ended this stressful process with an amazingly successful outcome!)

Sorry for the delayed reply here…the Glenn Gould school informed us that Paul Kantor will be leaving the school after this year, so we withdrew our application. We have heard from another source that his students (or some of his students from GG) will be moving to Rice to continue their study with him there. Not sure about the reliability of that source. FYI.

My son had his Oberlin audition yesterday for Jazz. Wow what a long day! We didn’t realize it was a group audition which was very different. He also had an interview with one of the professors regarding being a Jazz Composition major as well as a Jazz Performance major. I think Oberlin jumped up on his list because he really liked what he saw. Sure it’s in the middle of nowhere in Ohio and it snows…..a lot, but they definitely have something special here.

We are now down to the final 2 auditions, Peabody and MSM. We fly to Baltimore on Monday and he auditions on Tuesday. Then we have about a 2 week break until NYC.

Did anyone hear from UT Austin Butler School of music?

My daughter got accepted to UTAustin with a Bachelor’s of Music degree program. But she didn’t hear specifically from the Butler school of music itself. Does this mean she is accepted to the Butler school of Music? I assume it does, since UTAustin doesn’t have a BM per se at the university…only at the Butler school. We plan to call on Monday to verify.

We audition at Peabody on Tuesday, too!
