My daughter and I have taken a side quest to NYC on the way to Peabody, landing last night around midnight, and it was snowing. She was so happy! “Baby’s first snow!” she exclaimed. I mean, it was maybe the 3rd time I’ve seen it actively snow so it was cool to me, too, not gonna lie.
My daughter had auditions at both Frost and Bienen this past weekend. They are both lovely schools! The weather was perfect at both schools making it such a pleasant experience.
The only major issue we had was at her Frost audition. We were told by a lady at the check in area that my daughter was to go up the stairs and sit in a chair outside the auditorium doors where a door monitor will escort her in. My daughter heard a lot of discussion inside after she saw a candidate leave from the same door. She assumed they were discussing the previous candidate’s audition and was still waiting for the door monitor to come and get her. But 5 minutes past her audition time we were getting extremely worried. So my husband went down to the information desk to talk to the woman again and she reiterated that door monitor will let her in. 5 more minutes passed and still nothing! We told my daughter to just walk in! So she did. They told her they did not think she was coming and that she was late! She explained that she was waiting outside for someone to bring her in. The did let her play, but not her full allotted time. Poor girl was so frazzled. She didn’t play her best, understandable. So we are not counting on Frost now, which is sad. And the girl who was before my daughter had to switch to BA instead of BM at last minute because of a hand injury. They did interview but never allowed her to play because they said they were out of time. The girl and her mom were upset that they didn’t allow her to play (they said they still have to hear her play even as a BA student) and were discussing the situation with the lady at the desk. They were summoning for the VP of the music school when we left. Felt very unorganized.
That sounds stressful! I’m sorry your daughter had to experience that.
We were also at Bienen this past weekend, and it seemed very well run for the musicians.
So far, from strictly a parent perspective, I’m giving full points to Vandy’s Blair School for making every student and family feel welcome and appreciated.
On another note, this was our first weekend without an audition in awhile. We have nothing until Juilliard in a few weeks. The lack of movement, stress, and anxiety have me feeling like I’ve lost a limb. The waiting after that will be interminable. Having this board to shout into the abyss is just great.
Speaking of waiting, how would anyone interpret a quick email reply from a professor in response to my student’s thank you note? The reply was same day, and it said something like, blah blah blah, “I hope (school name) will be possible for you.”
I’m trying to manage expectations here. How would y’all interpret that: neutral, or possibly positive?
My daughter (VP) had a great experience at Eastman and Oberlin this weekend! Different vibes and processes, but both welcoming (Panera bagel buffet at Oberlin!), efficient, and informative. We were all impressed that Oberlin’s president came to greet and share her passion for the College and Conservatory.
Does anyone have an outline of IU Jacobs’s or Boston’s audition days for vocal music? After having great experiences this weekend, she’s trying to see if she can squeeze in sample lessons before or after, but we’d need to adjust our travel plans.
Feel very free to message me directly with any Oberlin VP questions (or Oberlin questions in general). Glad you had great experiences at both Eastman and Oberlin.
As far as IU, I have done that audition day with two VP girls–the most recent 2 years back–and they both ended up there. I have also been communicating with someone whose daughter auditioned for VP there last Friday. Audition days go something like this: Check-in is in the Musical Arts Center when you arrive. Undergrad voice is typically on the Friday with audition time slots in the late afternoon/evening. 10am that day is a general music school meeting and 1pm a Voice specific meeting (was conducted by the department head and allowed time for Qs and As our years). In between there are opportunities for music school tours and warming up in the practice building. Feel free to reach out with more specific questions if you wish. I’m super familiar with the town and campus.
Shoulders waaaayyyy down. My fears of “what if NO ONE takes her” are off the table.
Her school is built like a bank safe. She could see the subject of the email, but it wouldn’t open completely. She texted me to do it about 5 times. There’s a good chance they took her phone!
S was accepted to Michigan SMTD Music Ed (voice) today! His first choice but we are OOS and not sure it can happen money wise. So now we pray for merit.
Thank You. Thanks to all of you for letting me anonymously wring my hands through this entire thing. You maintained my sanity and probably saved my marriage too!
This is our first time applying to music schools and Michigan was the first “regular decision” he received. We were surprised it came so early and were expecting it closer to mid/late March. His audition was Jan 16, so maybe that’s why the decision came in February? He applied “early action” to 4 schools and had those decisions between January 20-30th. However, we are still waiting on merit from 3 out of 4 of those schools. What a process!
