How much does class rank actually count in college admissions for Ivy League universities? I’m ranked 5th out of 550, have an SAT score of 2370, an unweighted GPA of 4.0, and have taken 8 AP’s up to the 11th grade. The only reason I’m ranked fifth is that some students took one AP during their freshman year. I go to a pretty large public school in Washington that ranked around 300 on the U.S. News list. Does this rank hamper my prospects? Would I have had a much larger chance for admission, had I ranked higher? Or is the difference between a val/sal and me negligible?

Rank is looked at in terms of the size and rigor of the school. You are in the top 1% of your class, so your rank is great. With your excellent scores and GPA, I’d say your ECs, academic/character recommendations and level of awards/athletics/accomplishments will be the deciding factors.
