Class Rank Question

I will be submitting my Common Application to Duke soon, and I already submitted it to another school, so I cannot make any changes. I had a question about class rank. My school does not rank to the number, but I am in the top 4% of my class (402 students), which roughly means I’m one of the top 16 or 17 students. On the Common Application, I could only put down top 10% since I don’t know my exact rank. Is there any possible way that Duke can find out that I’m in the top 4%? I know that class rank really isn’t that important, but Duke is my top choice and I would much rather have them know I’m top 4% as opposed to top 10%, if it makes any sizable difference at all.

If your school keeps track of the top 4% officially, then it should be reported to Duke by your school. If it’s an unofficial thing that you just happen to know, then there’s no way to validate it. In other words, put top 10% on the common app and your school should give Duke the specifics. I wouldn’t be overly concerned with it. Top 10% is fine and then they’ll look at your grades more closely and course rigor, so they’ll know how well you’ve done.

You actually can submit different versions of the common app. Go to the instructions page and see the part about common app versions.
