class rank

is it true that pitt takes class rank into great,great consideration?

SATs are the most important. Pitt likes to use class rank because it is a better way to compare students than GPA. GPA calculation varies so greatly from school to school that it is nearly impossible to compare a student’s GPA compared to another’s, but class rank shows how well you performed among your peers who had the same GPA standards.

IMO, class rank along with the strength and rigor of your hs courses has a bearing in admissions. In the admissions info sessions we attended, course work - along with everything else: i.e., rank, scores - seemed to be emphasized. They want to know that the student has challenged himself/herself in hs: succeeding in demanding coursework. The student has not taken the easy road in hs, although the rank might be impressive. Essentially, every part of your academic record is important. Good luck!

So technically, if one was taking all honors courses and AP’s and challenging themselves, but earned B’s and C’s because of the large coursework along with a time consuming extracurricular, thus being 150/700 in their class, Pitt wouldn’t see it as a huge negative?

(this is my situation)

El C, you might wish to contact the Office of Admission and Financial Aid (OAFA) and review your situation with an admissions rep. Only someone from UPitt could fairly consider your courses/grades and other pertinent info and give you somekind of indication for successful admission. In general, schools take a “holistic” view of each applicant, considering everything that’s put before them in the application. Again, good luck to you, and continue to do your best in hs.

LBP is right, we are not the best people to be answering these types of questions. You need to talk to someone in the admissions office. All I can say is that your courseload is definately taken into consideration, and Pitt looks highly on AP classes. To get a better answer, you need to talk to someone from the school.

also, one last measly quesion, does upitt take SAT into more favor thn ACT? or is their pref. for both the same?

IMO, I don’t think it matters which test you take. I’d suggest you take both the SAT and ACT, and then have the best scores sent. This will cost $, but that’s what my D did. She initially did not indicate any school on the tests’ registration forms but waited to see her scores. And if both scores are impressive - send both. The ACT has its advantage, though, because you are not penalized for wrong answers as you are on the SAT. The scoring is different.

Yeah, it doesn’t really matter, Pitt accepts both.
