class val act < salu

Hey guys,

The class valedictorian has an ACT score 1pt less than the salutatorian. However the val took 2x AP as the salutatorian. If they apply to the same school, and only one will get accepted- who will it be? Course Rigor vs ACT score?

I think much depends on the other components of the application and the applicant’s profile in general. For example, is one a URM, first generation college student, legacy, unfortunate family dynamic, essays, recs, etc.

Assuming all else is equal (which as jshain points out, it never is), I imagine the valedictorian would get the nod more often than not.

You describe a big difference in course rigor: twice as many APs. That would make a difference at elite private schools. One point on the ACT–a 34 vs a 35, for example–is minor in comparison. On the other hand, a strictly by the numbers public might take the sal, instead. Actually, the latter would probably take both of them. The former, who knows. :)
