So unfortunately it seems that most… well, more like all … of the classes I wanted to take this semester have filled up before I got a chance to get to orientation. As a result, I am forced to either completely revise my schedule or get onto a waitlist and hope for the best.

My question here is: If I am on a waitlist (for a relatively large class, say EECS280), is it realistically possible for me to get off from that waitlist by the end of summer? Or do professors generally take only a couple of people that are at the top of the list off of it?

Also, looking through a previous thread on this subject I noticed that another possibility could be to ask the professor teaching the class to get taken off of the waitlist. Is this option viable for pretty much anyone or is it in there only for extreme circumstances?

What are you majoring in? I suggest you talk to your program advisor.

I am in IOE and our program advisor is awesome. I was on the wait list for a class (towards the top though) and she gave me electronic override. This happened in May.

I am going for Computer Science, but I am still undeclared since I am an incoming freshman. Correct me if I’m wrong, but unfortunately I think that I have no access to program advisers just yet.

If you are an incoming freshman, your advisor is someone from the EAC. You cannot declare your major until the second semester of your freshman year.

Also, you need credit for ENGR 101 or 151. You should take one of those first semester and then take EECS 280 the following semester. I doubt many incoming freshman take EECS 280 his or her first semester. As an incoming freshman, you probably won’t be able to be taken off the waitlist for that class.

Your first semester should be something like

-ENGR 101/151 or ENGR 100
-Chem 130 or Physics 140/160/240/260 with the lab
-Math 115/116/214/215/216 or the honors equivalent

If you want more credits, then you could throw in intellectual breadth classes.

Hmm, I heard from other people that EECS280 could be taken during first semester as long as a person had previous programming experience. Nonetheless, other freshman classes like eecs 203 and even engr 101/151 are already filled up. What could I do about the waitlists in those classes?

Are you in CoE or LSA? In LSA, you can jump straight into 280 no problem. In CoE, it’s going to require you get approval from someone, which you may or may not get.

And I disagree, chances are you will be able to get off the waitlist for a class like 280. But it might not happen before classes start. Just stick with it (if you are in LSA) and you’ll most likely get in.

I’m in CoE. In terms of approval, do you mean an approval from the professor teaching the course and the adviser?

Also, could you please explain how waitlisting works exactly?
Do I have to wait for people currently enrolled into the class to drop it (hence waiting until the classes start) or can I just contact the professor teaching it and ask for him/her to take me off of the waitlist?

Usually there is an automatic “Take everyone off the waitlist and add them to the class.” For major classes like 203 and 280 that happens during finals of the previous semester. After that, I think it’s just one-by-one talk to the professor.

As for approval, you just need approval to skip 101/151, so that’s with an adviser. Regardless of their answer, you can still take 280, but it’s kind of silly to take 280 and then take 101 (though they might make you do so).
