Is it standard for people to take 4 classes per quarter? How many people take 5 classes a quarter?

It’s standard 3-4. If you want to take five classes, you have to pay a lot more money. And a quarter passes by really quickly, so you don’t want to overload and have not enough time in each course.

It depends on how many credits the classes are, NYandere is right if that 5th class takes you over the alloted number of credits per term.

The below is slightly misleading. Taking a fifth (or sixth, etc.) class does not cost anything extra unless you use the credits to graduate early.

The maximum standard class load (i.e. not an overload requiring dean’s authorization) is also higher in non-WCAS UG schools. So students in Comm can take up to 5.99 credits as a normal load, vs. WCAS’s 4.99. Permission for an overload is contingent on GPA, but rarely withheld.

There are, as amtc pointed out, classes worth less than a full credit. So number of courses is not the best way of thinking about it.

What is credit max for mccormick?

Arbiter has the right way of things. Unless you plan to use 5-credit quarters to graduate early (after all, snagging a degree in 3 years saves you $50,000…but they certainly want to recoup some of that) they won’t cost you anything. I know people who take 5 classes in order to catch up on a double major, make up for a 3-class quarter (sometimes due to scheduling, or marching band, or dropping a class, what have you), or just because they are interested in a 5th subject. I remember reading an article on double/triple majoring wherein one of the interviewees was a triple major who had taken 7 class quarters.

Additionally, Arbiter is also right in that sometimes you take a music class or dance class that is only partial credit. Dance majors sometimes mention taking 5-8 (!) classes per quarter, and most people who double in the music school go on five years.

Four classes will give you plenty to do, I promise, especially in McCormick. Looks like McCormick can register for up to 4.99 credits during the normal registration period, and then take on additional credits during the first week of classes, which is how it is in School of Comm.

Also some courses, like production labs and whatnot, count for 0 credit, but are required for certain majors. So that’s already an extra course you take without counting towards the 4 course limit.
