So I’m an international student. The antique cars always look terrific to me but in my country it’s much more expensive to get than a normal car, and a college student has no reason to get those (even having a car is really unusual here). Still it’s my dream to have one. Would it be normal (and possible) to get one as daily driver in college? I’m not sure which school I’ll end up going but it’s likely in the Northeast where there’s way too much snow. Should I still do it? Comments? Car recommendations?
At many urban or suburban colleges, having any car is more hassle and expense than it is worth.
Cars get destroyed in college towns. Couple, older inexpensive cars and outdoor or street parking with inebriated students with little driving experience, and you get alot of accidents. Save the classic car for when you finish school and have someplace safe to park it.
A typical university campus or college town isn’t a good place for an antique car. There are a lot of areas that have really tight parking and such. Scrapes and dings aren’t uncommon. At many schools, having a car is more of a hassle than anything else. Parking is typically not free at most places in my experience, and it can actually get quite expensive.
It’ll be parked outside all winter long unless you pay (a lot) for indoor parking. The northeast tends to get a lot of snow. Keep in mind that you need a car that can be driven all year.
I agree with all of the above, but I will have an antique car at college because that is the car I have. Its by no means a showcar. It already had some dings, scratches, and mismatched paint before I got it and my plan is to just not fix those until after college.
If you don’t regularly drive I would strongly encourage you to get a regular car if you find it’s needed. Modern day cars are much much safer than those from the 1970s or before. Just go to Youtube and look up crash tests with classic cars versus modern cars (I’m on mobile so I can’t link to it). Whereas the modern car is seriously damaged but the driver ok, a 50s muscle car in the same crash test absolutely crumples and in many instances would kill the driver.
Get the antique car when you are out of college and have a place to store it in a garage.
I think it also depends on what you mean by antique car. If we’re talking about a show quality muscle car, then likely not. If it’s a beat up 52 Chevy and a few dings don’t matter, then I don’t see it being an issue.
It very much depends on which school you’re going to. If you live off campus in your own flat with its own parking safe from people on the street, why not? If you live in a dorm and parking is tight and it’s easily walkable to anywhere you’d want to go, ditch the car.
This is a disaster waiting to happen.
No. Aside from the snow and ice in the Northeast, our snowplows also dispense a lot of salt on the roads throughout the months of bad weather. The salt eats at the ice preventing accidents, but it also eats at the paint and rusts out the cars. The people I know with classic cars or sport cars tend to garage them from October until May and have a more practical vehicle for the winter.
Rich people drive junky cars and have nice houses. Get a vehicle that you don’t care about someone putting a dent in. And 4WD is nice in snow. Airbags are nice and so is cheap insurance. You won’t get either with a classic car.
