Classical guitar at Princeton?

My daughter is a hs junior, beginning to look at colleges. She wants to major in math or engineering, but wants to continue to study classical guitar. Her stats are good, and she heard somewhere that Princeton has a classical guitar instructor that studied with Segovia, can anyone confirm this? Can’t find any faculty member in searching the Princeton website under classical guitar. Trying to find schools with math/engineering that also have classical guitar is a bit daunting. Also, can a student study with music faculty and not major in music? Any input would be helpful.

Yes, a student can study music and not major in it. Also, participating in music extracurrics (Orchestra, Choir, etc) frequently gives students half off on lessons.

Is it easy to get lessons in all kinds of instruments, at different levels?

Yes, a student can definitely study with music faculty without majoring. That includes taking the excellent composition classes. Not exactly what you asked about, but I often hear pieces by this prof on our classical music station: http://www.stevenmackey.com/

To zantedeschia, if you are in a music ensemble you can get free or subsidized private lessons.

And how hard is it to get into a music ensemble?

Depends on your skill level.

A cappella is extremely competitive, and so is PU Orchestra.

arent there a lotta a cappellas tho?

Thanks, mzhang23. My daughter is also a vocalist - all-state and all-eastern alto. She sings with a chamber group in high school and plays french horn as well. Sounds like a number of musical opportunities! I’m hoping that we can visit this spring, but she’s way over-involved with EC’s - mostly music. She won’t major in it, but hopes to always be involved in musical groups.

yes the mccarter theatre, a tony-award winning theatre, is right by it and princeton also has the best opportunities for singing and musical theatre outta the ivies

woa thats amazing…
makes me want to go to Princeton even more!

anyone who can rock out some classical guitar (acoustical) is my hero. no questions asked.

i can play twinkle =P i wanna learn so badly. everyone plays classical guitar around here

That’s my goal in college. I shall soon become Classical Guitar Master Guru Ruler Specialist Emperor of the World! mwahahahaha!

I’m not sure that the Bach Cello Suite is rocking out on classical guitar. I’ve agreed that she can put me in a nursing home if she’ll come and play for me on Sundays.

according to my princeton tour guide, princeton will fund whatever musical instrument you desire to play and will give you private lessons!
