Tufts vs. UNC-CH- which one has a “stronger” program? I have a feeling this might end up being the deciding factor for me, as I feel basically equal on every other judging option I can think of in trying to decide. I’m looking for proximity to professors, resources, how structured the program is, study abroad/dig opportunities…etc.

Tufts Classics and Archaeology are very tight-knit departments – you get a lot of one-on-one interaction with faculty. Dig trips are very well-organized and well-worth it according to my friends majoring in arch. The classics dept is very well-known and among the very best departments in the school. You should check out the depts’ websites – you’ll see more about trips and independent study, etc. there.

Yikes, tough choice. I’m a Classics major at Duke primarily interested in archaeology, and I’ve taken several courses at Chapel Hill; they have a fantastic department. Thanks to research I’ve done with professors at Duke and UNC, I’m going on a dig in Cyprus for free. The professor who teaches Near Eastern Archaeology at UNC is in charge of all of the fieldwork in Turkey, and the other professors are equally well connected. As a matter of fact, Duke and UNC recently formed a consortium in archaeology: http://www.aas.duke.edu/ccma/

Tufts also has quite a good program in archaeology. Tufts offers cross-registration with Brandeis and Boston U, I think, which are also strong in archaeology. Tufts also has ties with the Museum of Fine Arts, and a distinguished Egyptologist there teaches at Tufts.

There’s really not much difference between the two academically. Both have superb programs with great faculty and resources.

To address another of your concerns…
There are several ways to apply to Oxford from any university, so this needn’t be a concern. Here’s a few that I looked at and/or applied through:
