Shannon, a dual degree holder from Michigan, is considered to be the father of information theory and is honored today with a Google daily doodle. Most of what is possible via modern computers, disc players…the internet…is due to Shannon.

Roughly 60 years after his seminal thesis, and a series of papers which laid the foundation for Information, Larry Page graduated from Michigan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Page and continued Shannon’s work.

Shannon’s work comprised the fundamental methods for encoding information; Page created the fundamental method for gathering and indexing that information.

In this case, Michigan’s best was MIT’s best; Michigan’s best was Stanford’s best.
