Cleaning wooden furniture

A dear friend of Happykid has passed a semi-heirloom (1890’s) child’s rocking chair on to her. It looks to be commercially made, rather than strictly handmade. The wood has a dark finish which could be due to the fashion at that time, or perhaps the varnish has darkened with age. The back and seat are padded leather, also dark brown. The previous owner did not know if those parts are original. If they are replacements, chances are that they are 40+ years old.

This chair has been collecting dust and household grime for 30-some years. Any advice on what I can use to clean it? My first instinct is to take Goo-Gone to the ickier parts, but I doubt that is the best way to approach things.

Please advise!

I would try Murphy’s Oil Soap to clean it.
We use Scott’s Liquid Gold spray, but I don’t think that would work on a lot of built-up grime.
Good luck - it will be so nice once it’s cleaned up!

I find that Murphy’s sometimes makes things gummy. Is it already sticky/gummy???

I like Method wood cleaner. We have a lot of antique wood furniture and it’s not too oily - just cleans the surface.

Some people love Orange Glo. I’ve been meaning to try it but haven’t yet.

Our wood guy said to use diluted Dawn soap. Then wiped down thoroughly with just plain water and finally dry well.

I would use white vinegar and water.

Wipe down thoroughly with dry cloth. Then mix warm water and vinegar to clean with clean white clothes. Then dry with clean, dry cloth/towel.

Lots of good things for me to try! Thanks!!

Try something like lemon oil. It is really a solvent but works well on wood.
