I’m interested in engineering. Can anyone give me any insights/experience with the Clemson engineering program?

Howdy, I am an engineering major-to be, so I hope I can help!
All freshman engineering majors at Clemson are required to take the general engineering program–this includes the core classes in calculus and physics as well as basics in ALL engineering majors. In other words, they let you experiment w/ chemical, mechanical, bio, civil, electrical and any other type of engineering I am forgetting. They do this because their studies have shown 50% of 1st semester sophomores and another 15% of 2nd semester sophomores change their mind regarding a specific type of engineering; the program thus saves you time and money in some respects. I do think, however, you have to go in with an intended choice so you can contact your advisor in a specific dep’t early on for further planning.

More broadly, Clemson is definitely an engineering/science school–the dep’ts are very strong. On the flip side, I know of people who have switched out of engineering b/c they didn’t like the frosh. general program. And if you are planning on bioengineering, CU takes great pride in inventing it :)

Hope that helped!
