I have often heard of Clemson described as like Auburn but with a lake. Both pretty similar. If you Google Clemson and Auburn history there are a lot of ties between the two so the fact that they seem pretty similar is no accident. I have two at Clemson and they both love it. All great schools you are considering. My youngest in HS has most of the same schools on her list.
Itās so tough to try to divine and read the tea leaves. We are in-state, so a little different. But I do know the amounts may not be the same from year to year. Our oldest, who graduated a few years ago, was top of his class, stellar stats, so we figured out which merit scholarship he would get. When the awards came out in March, he did indeed get that scholarship, but the amount was drastically lower than it had been the year prior. So many students want to come, that they donāt feel compelled be overly generous with merit, unfortunately. My youngest will be attending in the fall, but we are realistic in our expectations of what her merit will be now. She was offered $11k per year at auburn, but for us IS Clemson is more economical and like a second home. Good luck to your student. I hope you will be pleasantly surprised with the merit offer in March!
I get it! If she gets into UNC in a few days, that will open up a new conversation re: value. Itās a completely different environment, though, so not sure it would even make sense for her. Thanks for your feedback!
Youāve nailed it! She has an application in at UNC, so that meets her criteria as well. But, I think her heart is with one of the others⦠she just needs to get comfortable with distance. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective.
Auburn does not have direct nursing, while Clemson does
What are the chances of getting accepted OOS after being deferred for Clemson nursing?
What town in Eastern NC? My girls grew up in Northern Nevada (we are still there), but we have a place in Emerald Isle, NC. Iāve been going there since 1984⦠grew up in VA. That area is absolutely one of my favorite places on earth. Anyhow, I have a daughter at Clemson right now, and my youngest just got in. They love it. A great small town vibe! Some of our good friends out here in NV were scholarship swimmers at Auburn, and they canāt say enough good things about it as wellā¦.
Should we submit 1260 SAT as a deferred applicant? Originally applied test optional, 4.1 gpa OOS. Full IB diploma candidate, psychology major. Itās in the middle 50% range but very far toward the bottom of the range.
ding ding ding! If my D26 ends up at Clemson, Iāll reach out to make connections!
I would not. My student was deferred with a 1500 and 4.3
I would not admit a 1260. I believe Psychology is a closed major which makes it more difficult. With a 4.1 and a full IB diploma the SAT score seems low. From what I have read regarding Clemson, you should not submit scores unless they can help your profile. I hope this helps. Iāve seen several post that they were accepted as test optional but had the rigor of an IB diploma.
I would not submit the SAT score. Psychology is not a closed major, so with other stats being strong and IB rigor, hopefully you will get good news in February. Submitting strong first semester grades may be helpful.
I like wouldnāt - itās just a ting above the 25th percentile. Looks like last year just over half submitted. That says, if the student feels strongly that they want to, itās ok. My kid was proud of her score and submitted even though it was not objectively wise for one school as she was a tad below the 25th percentile.
Deferred is not a rejection whereas a waitlist is for most. A 1260 is unlikely to help and could hurt but thatās just opinion. Others would say - if you donāt submit they might think you got an 1160.
86% had a 4 GPA so you might be light there or might not - you want to see how they recalculate your GPA. If you ask, they should tell you. Your 4.1 might not be on their scale.
The good news - as a deferral, you have a chance to get 1st semester grades in.
Just remember, if they do say no, donāt try and guess. Truth is, youāll never know why.
Good luck.
For deferred applicants, how do they actually submit fall grades? I donāt see that you can submit an attachment in the additional information form, and none of the attachments you can submit in the portal relate to grades.
Sounds like no grades but you might call and ask:
I was deferred. What are my next steps?
There is nothing else that you need to do at this point. Your application file is already complete for Regular Decision review.
If there is any additional information you want us to consider as part of the Regular Decision group, you can provide it through an optional form. The optional Defer Form will be in your Clemson admissions portal. It should be completed no later than January 10.
Has anyone heard about getting merit in March, but didnāt have it in their acceptance letter?
I emailed Financial Aid. They said it was still possible to get merit in March, although most students were notified in their letters.
My guess is that their awards for merit are super formulaic and if thereās anything about your studentās stats that doesnāt fit the formula, a human has to review. E.g. - my son goes to a non-ranking school, so they donāt have class rank to plug into their formula.
Itās just an educated guess, so take it with a grain of salt.
My D24 got merit from Clemson in March, after not having it mentioned in her acceptance letter from Early Action.
Are you OOS?
Yes
