The defendants have said Hipps’ own negligence caused his death.
But the family is now seeking to update the lawsuit with new information from a witness who alleges Hipps, a pledge at the time, “was forced to walk the rail, slipped from the railing and caught the railing under his arms,” according to the Greenville News.
Hipps then tried to climb back up with no help, but lost his grip and fell, striking his head on the rocks in shallow water below, according to the report.
Not even one tried to help him. Appalling.

I live in SC and have been following this case since it happened last year. I do believe that hazing was at least in part , if not totally responsible for his death. I truly feel terrible for the family. Unfortunately, the credibility of the witness who has come forward has been called into question yesterday as he was unable to say with certainty what day he saw the events and reported clothing that was inconsistent with what Hipps wearing when found. I personally believe the truth will come out( hopefully very soon) Until someone gets a conscience , the family sits and waits for answers and that is terrible.
@carolinamom2boys the questioning of the witness’ credibility probably explains why I couldn’t access some articles about the witness’ account today.
such horror.
I have never understood why Alums from various fraternities don’t crack down hard on any sort of hazing. Schools can’t do it, but the Alums can.
I don’t understand either. Found this article regarding the witness. http://www.heraldonline.com/news/local/article31184165.html
That witness isn’t very credible at all. In fact, sounds like he is lying through his teeth.
Why don’t the defendants step up and tell the truth? Oh well, that’s the kind of society we have in the U.S. today; cover your arse even when you are as guilty as sin.
everyone involved is responsible. why people are so anxious to join a frat and willing to do stupid/dangerous things to do so speaks about weakness in human psychology. the need to fit in/validation over rules common sense for many. if I have to do stupid stuff to be your “friend” I will find other friends.
I dislike frats and feel sorry for those who seek out validation from them.
