Why is it that when you’re trying to make new friends in college, a lot of them have this “you are not a part of this clique” type of attitude when you try to talk to them? Isn’t that a kind of attitude you would have in high school? So basically if they don’t know you, then they don’t want to get to know you simply because you are not part of or friends of someone in the group.

I’ve found that it’s easier to get people to talk durring the start of the fall semester. Most of the are new or have had friends graduate and are more open to people outside of their normal group. All other times, esp. durring the spring semester, it can be kinda hard. Just be friendly and persistant, and eventually people will start talking to you.

So is this a girl’s thread or unisex thread?

i think its unisex. depends i think on what replies it will receive.

Unisex.

And yeah I thought about how it is the Spring semester now so a lot of people are probably not looking for friends, etc. I dunno, I mean I’ve tried talking to a lot of people this semester so far and I like to think of myself as friendly (smile a little, be a little funny, just lay back and relax type of attitude). Then I usually get these strange vibes from people like they don’t want to talk to me or something. I try not to take it personally of course because I know I am a good person to talk to. At least my new roommates are opening up to me more, so that’s a start I guess.

Maybe it’s something you’re doing that’s bothering them.

Not sure what that could be, but hey I mean no one’s perfect right?

Blah, I hoped that would go away in college, but I suppose I was just being naive. I noticed in high school cliques seemed to dissolve as we got older, or it may have just been I started talking to more people ![]()
And adconard, as long as you know you are being the best person and you think of yourself as outgoing, thats all that matters, b/c it will eventually work out.

Is there any opportunity for leadership training on your campus? Usually there is some organization or office that offers opportunities…you will meet people looking for new friends as you are…get to do some fun things and forget these folks who won’t “mix”. Look for other venues and opportunities on your campus and you will find lots I guarantee it.

I noticed most of the cliques in college usually depend on what sport or activity they’re in. Then there are the very talkative, social people on my floor that always go down to meal together. This happens for the rest of your life because my dad says this happens at his job too.

Yeah I mean I can definitely understand if you’re going through some issues in your life or just don’t really feel like talking to anyone at the moment.
