closed captioning

Do parents encourage their kids to use closed captioning while watching TV? I know kids hate subtitles, but kids today, even in college, can’t spell. By using closed captioning they’d be able to know when to use:

“your” and “you’re”
“there,” “their,” and “they’re”
“to” and “too”
“all right” and “alright”

and my favorite:

“y’all” and “ya’ll”

I wouldn’t rely on closed captioning for spelling lessons - I’ve seen some very poor spelling on the cc.

How do YOU spell ya’ll?

I love closed captioning, but I would not recommend it for spelling, though one place it was really fun was in Mexico, English spoken with Spanish CC, my rusty Spanish was improved immediately as I saw the spellings and tenses of the words whilst hearing them, too.

I have always wondered why they do not do obligatory closed captioning for kids’ shows to improve reading skills…some adults, too.

Fun idea.

I think getting rid of the TV would be best though- kids would read more. If not books (the ideal) at least the internet.
