Why are so many classes closed before we even get to get on and register. Tomorrow my daughter registers for spring but there are NO UGS courses available. It’s my understanding she needs one! This is crazy! Can someone enlighten me?

From what I understand, classes can be closed for a couple of reasons: full, the waitlist is full, among other things.
Some of them will open up for the next group of people registering, you just have to keep checking back.
I know that a class I needed was closed, then appeared open later–same thing with restricted classes. Just obsessively check what’s open/closed.

My son called tonight, and he got a great schedule. So everything worked out just fine. It’s the first time he’s done it without help. I’m glad he figured it out!

what can you do when you need a UGS and some other classes this semester and they don’t have any available? I have heard you can just attend a class you want and then eventually if someone drops you will be let in? Can you call someone? I mean, how am i gonna fill my schedule?

You have to wait in between Christmas break and when the semester starts- usually people drop or things happen (IE. Students don’t pay their tuition bill on the specified date) that causes students to drop out of classes. Sometimes this doesn’t happen. My friend was ranked 2 out of 23 on the waitlist for Analytical Chemistry all summer and never got in till he went to the undergrad office and lied about double majoring in Chemistry.

It appears that the UGS classes are closed and then opened again…this is what happened to my daughter when she was registering…literally from one minute to the other…the UGS she wanted was closed and then all of the sudden open again…also, this past semester she was able to add a History class that she needed during the add/drop period…there are apparently alot of people who don’t pay thier tution bill and thier classes are dropped.

I am just a little …FURIOUS! … My freshman son had a late sign up date and he has ONE class confirmed and the rest are waitlisted. Not to mention that I am paying big bucks (against my wishes) to let him attend the U of T at A when he was offered numerous full-ride scholarships at several universities. I really hope I did not make a big mistake.

@windowbob Don’t fret! This is very normal. Your son has a late sign up date BECAUSE he is a freshman and registration occurs on a rolling basis, beginning with seniors, then juniors, then sophomores, so on. Having one class confirmed and a bunch of waitlisted classes is not abnormal. If anything, your son needs to add other “placeholder” classes to his schedule so he can be considered a full time student (for scholarship reasons if he has them or for various other reasons). He will most likely be taken off the waitlist and put into the classes he wants by the start of the spring semester because people add and drop classes all of the time during the first 12 days of the start of a semester. There is no need to worry because everything works itself out in the end for the most part.

Thanks for calming me down. I was about ready to start calling and see if any of his other offers were still good for spring! ha! Maybe I’ll feel better if I wear burnt orange today. I’ll give it a try.

LOL Windowbob…you have cracked me up today…I hope wearing burnt orange is helping
Really…your son will be able to get classes that he needs at add/drop on Christmas Break…I would call the registrar’s office and find out the exact moment that he will be able to log in and add classes…good luck!

You need to use open classes as fillers, placeholders.

This would work:

Use one of the AMS 311 classes as a filler. Right now, there are open classes at 8, 10, or 11 MWF.
That will hold spaces for 3 credits if you can register for one, 6 if you can register for two.

If you can only register for one, use one of the HIS 306 classes as a filler. Right now, there are open classes from 11 to 12:30 T Th or 2 to 3:30 T Th.

If you need a place holder filler class for 9 am MWF, you can use Bio 307D.

You want to be sure you are registered for 12 credits. Find classes that meet at the times of the classes where you are in the best spot on the waitlist.
