Closest airport to NYU by taxi?

I’m planning to fly to NYC from Vancouver, and then catch catch a cab to NYU. Would someone be able to tell me the closest airport to NYU by taxi, and give me a rough estimate on how much that would cost?

dream,

Try the following. Reputable service. They were charging $45 from JFK Airport to Manhattan, but Laquardia Airport maybe closer and hence cheaper. However, there maybe more flights from Vancouver to JFK Airport in NYC. The site is reporting promotional fares at certain times at this time.

[New York City Car & Limousine Service | Manhattan, Brooklyn, NJ & NYC Limo & Car Services](http://www.dial7.com/)

P.S. There is a taxi queue at the airport which charges around the same as the company I listed above, so depends on if you want to reserve something ahead of time (plus no promotional fares with the queue taxis, but they are supposed to quote the same standard fares from the airport to Manhattan).

From my research, using public trans would be cheaper. And, just my opinion, a better chance to experience NYC. You really think you’re going to afford cabs to and from the airport every time you fly home?

According to [New York City Taxi Fare Finder](<a href=“Home - TaxiWiz.com”>Home - TaxiWiz.com) a taxi from laGuardia to NYU would be around 34 dollars, which is pretty reasonable IMO. In the future as I get to know the city better I’ll definitely look into public transit but for my first time I think I’ll indulge in a taxi.

dream,

Did you see the site I referred you to? It is $29 from LaQuardia to Manhattan with the promotion which I agree is not a bad price for the first time to NYC with suitcases that you would have to maneuver through trains and platforms or bus stops and streets (if choosing public transit).

ib,

For those choosing public transit, perhaps you can recommend the best public transit routes from JFK and Laquardia into Manhattan where the NYU dorms are.

wow, i didnt actually see that. That’s great, i assume NYU is below 125th street?

dream,

Yes, it is located in the lower part of Manhattan. Just be aware that the promotional is restricted by hours of service. I think something like between 4 AM to 7:30 PM for the promotion to be used.

Actually, promotional rate is good from 4:15 AM to 7:45 PM.

Also, in looking at the fine print for the company I referenced above (also check with other companies you find), there may be extras for tolls for say, the Midtown Tunnel or other crossings with tolls (besides possible parking fees and the “mandatory gratuity”).

I am wondering the same thing. I am flying into LaGuardia on August 26th and will be staying with family until I move into my dorm on August 29th.

For future reference, I am wondering, is it easier to get to NYU from JFK or LGA? Flights are cheaper on JFK but its farther away. Are there subways or trains that go from the airport to Manhattan? Taking a taxi can get expensive. Best mode of transportation from airports?

RESPONSES FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED, PLEASE.

I have heard from word of mouth that it is not too bad by subway to and from JFK. From the airport, you have to get to the A train (Airtrain) and then change at Howard Beach station for the subway trains getting into Manhattan.

You can also get the M60 bus from Laquardia into Manhattan (upper Manhattan).

For future reference, try this Link:

[MTA/New York City Transit Services to LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports](http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/airport.htm)

ok, I have done this route about 10 times now, so I know what to do.

Here are some notes.

For Taxis–
You DO NOT need to make prior travel arrangements to get you to campus. There is a line of taxis, just waiting to pick you up from the airport and take you to your destination for this “flat” rate. It is right as you exit the baggage claim, you will see a line of people waiting for the taxi, and airport staff supervising everything. I say “flat” because there are always weird charges that they tack on. Also, sometimes it isnt a set rate and they charge you by the minute.

Laguardia is cheaper in terms of taking a taxi from LGA to NYU. It is about $35 I think, plus tip. I HATE THIS AIRPORT THOUGH!!! I have used it 3 times, and have NEVER had a good experience. One time they made me miss my flight, and sent me on another flight that tacked on another 3 hours to my flight. The airport is pretty gross too. It is always the cheaper option though, for taxis.

JFK has an awesome airport (especially for JetBlue!!), is very quick, and painless. The taxi rides are about $50. Sometimes it will randomly be $45, sometimes $60. It is more expensive than LaGuardia, but far superior, IMHO.

One of my favorite things to do is use SuperShuttle. It is only $15 to JFK to/from dorms, and is a very professional service. You just give up privacy, but it is awesome, and cheap. Always arrives promptly, and a good economic alternative. I have used this method about 4 times, and you can reserve it the night before, and the rate doesnt go up.

FYI, the Subway route is NOT for the faint of heart, nor should it be utilized if you do not have a lot of experience with it, are by yourself, or have lots of suitcases. yes, it is cheaper, but if cost is THAT crucial of a factor for you, do SuperShuttle.

Wooden, Great response^^^,

The SuperShuttle sounds like the best choice balancing cost and convenience.

I was looking at the subway and bus info for both NYC airports and found them
a little daunting myself, even though I grew up in NYC. For instance, it sounds like certain “A” subway trains, e.g., ones saying Far Rockaway or Rockaway go to the airport, so you have to read the signs carefully.

Also, the matter of lugging suitcases on top of making connections (in a foreign place). Uughh! I am glad a voice of experience weighed in. Also, personally, I always make reservations to depart out of JFK, just because some of the Laquardia runways are known to be rather short. Haha, that is me and some nervousness about flying. Honestly, JFK tends to have the cheaper flights, as one poster noted above.

It is better off to cab it from the Laguardia since the train is too far away and the bus is not reliable. Yellow cabs are kind of cheap but then they all these extra charges and you will have to pay for the toll or you can ask them to cross through the Queens Borough Bridge. The other cabs: They are better because you can haggle with them. Try to get a driver that is not to dressed up(no ties or hat a button down shirt is fine) because those who are ussauly the ones that charge the most. Avoid those people who are “managers” of the taxi company who direct people to cars beacuse they charge alot as well.
If you are willing to take public transportation: You can take the M60 bus to Astoria BLV(just ask the bus driver hen is that stop), get off get on the Manhattan bound N trian to 14th/Union Sq.(Leaves you a few blocks away from Third North, Founders, and a easy walk to Rubin and Brittany and a little longer walk to the other dorms.) If you want you can transfer to the R trian and get off on 8th street(leaves you realy close to Rubin and Brittney and a easy walk to ashington Sq. dorms).

The trian ride from JFK to NYU is easy. The on certian day you can take Airtrain to Howard Beach then takethe A trian To West 4th(Leaves You about one block west of Washington Sq. Park so that is good for Hayden, Goddard, Weinstien, and if you like to walk Rubin and Brittany) or 14th(Leaves you on the west side, meaning you have to walk about 6 Aveunes east and two block south for Founders and Thrid North it is tice aslong from the West Forth stop) depending on where you are dorming/want to go.

If you fly to EWR (Newark), just outside the baggage claim area, you can take the Bus service (Coach USA) to Manhattan (about 45 min ride). The first stop is to the Port Authority (40th st.), then take a yellow cab to your dorm.

Yes, the Airtrain from JFK to Howard Beach ($7) and then “Take the A Train” to West 4th ($2) is the cheapest but can be a hassle with multiple bags. The bus from Newark and then a taxi is probably the next cheapest and easier with bags. There is also a train from Long Island airport (ISP) to Penn Station.

I like flying into EWR a lot more than JFK or LGA. The taxi situation at EWR is a little more complicated, but taking the train from EWR to Penn and then cabbing it is bearable. I’ve done that multiple times. I’ve landed at EWR at 11 and made it to a 2PM class at Bobst.

If this is your first experience coming into Manhattan alone with luggage, I would definitely try to take a cab or the supershuttle out of the NY airports. Especially if you have luggage and don’t know the Mass transit system. It can be a little intimidating for even New Yorkers.

I’m desired to take an airport shuttle, but naively asking, do I have to drive the shuttle on my own during my turn to get off? Since I’m an international freshman, it’s impossible for to be get the driving license right after getting out of JFK…:frowning: And I don’t really want to take a cab. Then is taking a train my only chance??

if u dont want to take a cab
…either u take the MTA or u walk it …lol

D has always flown into LaGuardia and taken cab to residence hall. Seems like she would have to take a cab to the subway station in order to take the train in. It’s just too hard to maneuver maximum baggage a la subway and really not all that costly. When she comes the other direction, she has normally had to be at the airport at dark-thirty (5-6am) and I have insisted on a car service that comes to her dorm, rings her, handles her luggage and deposits her at the airport exactly where she needs to be. NY Limo Car is about 10-15 more than a cab (it’s not a limo, just a regular car but with a uniformed driver) and well worth it to not have my kid standing on a street corner at 4 in the morning.
