Closet storage

All my Dressing Young and How to wear leggings Ccers-
I spent part of the afternoon cleaning out my closet. Or at least getting a start. I have a large walk in closet but I think I have a lot of wasted space.
Problem areas- how do you store your handbags? Right now I have the very large totes on the floor of one section. All the rest are piled on one large heavy duty hook on the back of the door. They are falling off and I can’t really tell what I have.
Areas that I might be able to put them. I have a small section of closet that has a double rod with a shelf above the 2nd rod halfway down the closet wall. Presently I have my jeans piled up on that shelf. But I could move them. That shelf is 12 inch deep. I also could empty that top or bottom rod.
Another option is the built in dresser top which is 21 inches deep.
How do you store your denim?
Leggings?
I also have a shelf around the top of the closet that I can’t reach. What do you store there? Right now it is empty collecting layers of dust.

Unreachable top shelf: out-of-season shoes in their boxes. Denim & cords storage–folded once and laid flat on shelves. Don’t own leggings but I assume they could be stored the same way or in a drawer. Or, if you truly wanted to save space, could you pile several on one hanger? I do that with large cashmere wraps.

Handbags–no good solution. Some are hanging on hangers from closet rod, wasting space. Those used less often are stored in their dust bags on that top shelf of closet.

While you did not inquire about jewelry, I use a belt hanger: [Wooden Belt Hanger - Walnut & Chrome | Product & Reviews - Only Hangers](http://www.onlyhangers.com/content/contentct.asp?P=31&PID=227)
Have also purchased skirt hangers from this company. They last forever.

Look forward to reading other replies.

I’m not good at linking threads…but there is another somewhat recent thread about closet organizers. Hoping someone can link it!

I don’t have a walk in and only have one long shelf in closet above the top rod. I keep my bags on the shelf in their bags. My shoes are all in boxes on the same shelf. I need a step stool to get anything down. I hang my jeans folded over the hanger on bottom rod. Leggings go in a drawer.

" how do you store your handbags?" - I use only one at a time, rotating by season. The others stay in a dresser drawer in the basement.

My walk-in closet is nice, but not huge. I have atwo inexpensive plastic storage chests with clear drawers. On sits on a narrow built in shelving unit - it has 6 small bins. The other one is on the floor and has three large drawers and wheels.

In one of our spare bedrooms, the closet has shelves that are about 18" wide, 15" deep, and maybe 18" high. I store my handbags (and some shoes and boots) on those shelves.

I have a hanging cloth thing from Ikea. It hangs from the closet rod. My purses fit nicely into it. I also have a small shelf on the wall for in season purse. Right now all of my fall purses are on that shelf.

How many bags do you ladies have?

I have moved twice in the last decade, and that took quite a toll on my impulse to amass…I still have the current black shoulder bag (Perlina), the 2 Coach shoulder bags (from the old full-leather days), a structured handbag I inherited from my mother, a couple of cheap evening bags …and I think that’s it!

For my everyday bags, I usually buy at TJ Maxx in the Stone Mountain/Tignanello price range in a neutral color and then just wear them 'til they’re falling apart. What my moves taught me is that it is pointless to keep old bags that have begun to fall apart and have been replaced in my daily life - so I got rid of them.

So that’s my solution - I now only own 4 bags; not too hard to manage.

Leggings - roll and store in a drawer - hanging them might create a crease.

Out of season purses - in a plastic storage container, top of closet - but I have limited # of purses. My D who is a purse hoard uses a multi-pant/skirt hanger and hangs a purse from each clip (2 per layer of the hanger). It’s sort of heavy so if you try this get a heavy duty hanger.

Shoes - these I have more of - out of season shoes ditto out of season purses above. Otherwise I have a built in rack that holds maybe a dozen and then various shoes/boots that I wear more often just hangin around on the closet floor!

Thank you. I don’t know how I missed that thread.
Memake- I don’t have a ton of bags but my current storage method isn’t working for the amount I do have. I am going to try to purge some of my older less expensive bags when I hit that area of my closet.
I think for today I am going to focus on cleaning out shoes and hitting the dresser drawers with an open mind. I know I have a number of items that should head to the thrift store.
One issue with my closet is that when our house was built 16 yrs ago we had nice built ins put inside the closet. Two high standing dressers, solid wood shelves and solid wood hanging racks. This makes it hard to add any other sort of closet system.I have a lot of space under the hanging racks of clothes that have become the depositing place for junk piled up on the carpet.
Thumper- I use similar hanging pieces to hold some of my sweaters and scarves. I don’t want to take rod space up to store the bags.
I have a floor to ceiling shelved section that right now if filled with shoes. Honestly if I cleaned that up I might find room for the bags.

I received this tip from a closet “expert”. First you need to go through your closest and purge. Now for the important step. Be honest with yourself and put ALL of your FAVORITE items hanging in a conveniently accessible, yet dedicated space. (it is okay to do this by seasons). Take the remaining items and turn the hangars around. The hangars can be righted if you wear them. Hopefully you/I/we will have a wake up call when the majority of the items on the reversed hangars are still reversed 6 months to a year from now.

I bought a little step ladder than folds flat so I can reach the LABELED items I store on my top shelf.

Kajon- Your closet expert is right. I do need to purge. I am trying! The flat folding step ladder is another great idea. As is the labeled stuff for the top shelf.
I like the hanger idea. Though to be truthful I have items that I have not worn in years still hanging in my closet. Some like the alpaca wool poncho that my H gave me 30 yrs ago I haven’t worn in probably 28 years. I did move my small amount of formal wear and heavy wool coat to a hall closet yesterday. That freed up some space.
