Closing CALS Education Dept

Just received news that CALS is closing the Education Department, which was a total surprise to me. Does anyone know if students who’ve already declared a minor in Education will still be able to pursue it? The e-mail says, “We are committed to developing scenarios that will allow current students to earn their intended degrees and related teaching accreditation as scheduled”…but not sure if this applies to the minor.

Nevermind…students in the minor are safe. Still surprised that they’re shutting down the whole department, though.

Will the minor still exist, or are they doing away with it entirely over the next few years? Daughter was planning on the minor, but she’s only a freshman so not officially accepted to the program yet. If they are ending the “official” minor, do you know if they will continue to offer some the same Education courses as they do now. She just really wanted to take those classes, and it looks like it’s very difficult for underclassmen to get in before they become full. She’s really bummed. I can’t believe it either… :(

No idea =/ If you want to send an e-mail inquiry, the e-mail I received gave the following instructions:

In the coming weeks, you will receive details about informational meetings to answer any questions you may have. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please contact Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs Don Viands at 255-3081 or drv3@cornell.edu, with inquiries about the undergraduate program, and Senior Associate Dean Max Pfeffer at 254-6765 or mjp5@cornell.edu, with inquiries about the graduate program.

Thanks for the info! If you hear anything interesting, could you please post…the problem is my daughter is not yet in the minor (and might never be, at this point), so she won’t be contacted via email. Any info would be most appreciated! In the meantime she’ll contact the person(s) you mentioned. Thanks!

Will do! The e-mail wasn’t very informative at all, but here’s the Daily Sun’s article about it: [Cornell Will Close Dept. of Education Over Two Years; Faculty to Relocate | The Cornell Daily Sun](http://www.cornellsun.com/section/news/content/2010/10/27/cornell-will-close-dept-education-over-two-years-faculty-relocate)

I’ll probably get more e-mails about those informational meetings soon, so if your daughter is interested in attending, I can forward that info as well.

That would be great! Thanks!
