How big is fashion at Pitt? I’m a girl and have pretty much no fashion sense, coming from a small town in the South… What type of winter clothing is “in”/what type is looked down upon? I’ve heard uggs and north face is sort of stereotypical… Anyone wanna shed some light into the fashion scene in Pittsburgh for a worried incoming freshman?

Get a warm winter jacket, you will make good use of it in Pittsburgh. There are some stores along Forbes such as rue21 that are fashionable and relatively inexpensive where you can stock up on clothing.

Otherwise, typical garb for a girl at Pitt are usually sweatshirts, jeans, the usual. Just make yourself presentable and no one will care. There really isn’t a super style conscious scene here (my hometown had lots of brand obsessed girls so I saw lots wearing Louis Vuitton, Juicy, Coach, etc… those types are rather absent at Pitt).

Oh, and get a good pair of rain boots because sneakers will get soaked walking on the sidewalk when it snows or rains.

Most girls all look the same… haha. Don’t worry about “getting looked down upon.” Being from the South, you should probably worry more about dressing warm, cause Pittsburgh is rainy, and in the winter, there’s a mean wind chill… It can be miserable.

honestly…from what I’ve heard from other college kids…fashion is not an issue at Pitt. In fact, it’s better than most colleges. For parties - wear a decent pair of jeans, nice shirt…it’s all good. It’s not like you’re in the middle of nowhere (Penn State) and you have to dress up to go to a frat/house party because you don’t have other opportunites to dress in a more formal manner. At Pitt, you have plenty of opportunities to dress in a formal way (going to the ballet, opera, art exhibit) if you so choose…or dress a bit more casual when attending frat or house party.

Just be yourself, and you’ll be fine

My daughter brought home all of her better clothes at Christmas. She prides herself in trying to wear a different Pitt apparel item each day. I have no idea how many t-shirts she has, but many!

I bought her darling (not Ugg) blue suede boots for winter; she never wore them. She did buy herself a pair of FiveToes shoes and thinks they are the greatest.

To the OP–you will be fine. Fashion is not a priority at Pitt unless it has always been a priority for you.

$3 Pitt t-shirts from The Pitt Shop are always fashionable…and make great gifts! ;-)

You will get TONS of free t-shirts. DS got them for attending various events.

oh my. personally, there is very little fashion sense at pitt (then again, i’m from cali so figures). there’s a cluster of hipsters and well dressed kids here and there, but the typical guy at pitt wears a pitt baseball cap and abercrombie/hollister polo and girls are boring with uggs/vera bradley bags/leggings or yoga pants. don’t even worry about it. people don’t even get that dressed up for parties compared to a lot of colleges i’ve visited and schools that my friends go to. people go to class in sweats and sweatshirts, so don’t even worry about it. plenty of people really don’t care too much about it

Fashion is not huge at Pitt. Girls only really get themselves dressed up when they’re going out to parties (dresses, heels, etc.) but even still you wouldn’t be looked down upon if you kept it casual. North Faces are stereotypical but they look so comfortable (I don’t have one but I want one)! Uggs are common as well, but I wouldn’t recommend them. My sister bought me a pair for graduation and I ended up not wearing them too much because it’s always so wet outside during the winter. I didn’t want to ruin them but they ended up a little destroyed. Rain boots and/or snow boots are definitely a good idea.

Overall, most people at Pitt are just trying to stay warm. Pitt sweatshirts, North Faces, sweaters, heavy coats are all very common because in all honesty, who gives a crap about fashion when the wind chill makes the temperature feel like -10?

Well it depends on the individual and your style. If you’re not into fashion- then you’re just not. My friends nd I are into fashion but there will be alot of people who arent and that’s fine. For the winter I’m getting Uggs and Sorel snow boots because winters there get pretty rough & those brands offer durable products.

Dont worry just be yourself & dress how you want. Your personality is more important. Hopefully I meet you in the fall. :)
