Clubs as a freshman

I’m very interested in getting involved in theater, the newspaper, and various service projects. Are there opportunities to join these clubs as a freshman or are they reserved more for upperclassmen?

I know there are at least 800 clubs on campus, so I think you’ll find plenty of opportunities. The Collegian (the student newspaper) is probably one of the more competitive options: you have to go during tryouts (held early in the semester) and write a sample story, and then the editors decide who makes the cut.

They usually have a big “day of service” volunteer project on campus during move-in week, so that might be a good chance to get more info about the service-related clubs and meet other like-minded students.

Many of the clubs recruit new members at the Involvement Fairs, which happen at the beginning of both spring and fall semesters. Here is a Collegian article about last January’s Fair-- [Spring involvement fair attracts over 3,500 - The Daily Collegian Online](http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2010/01/13/fair_attracts_over_3500.aspx)
