<p>Okay, so here are my stats:</p>

<p>Race: African American
Gender: Female
<strong>I’m not sure how important this is, but I come from a single parent home earning <$50k, and am from a small town in the south</strong>
GPA: 4.5 (w), 3.7 (u)
Rank: 9/427
Courses: 8-9 APs by graduation, 10+ honors
Significant ECs: Dance (9,10,11), Literary Society (10,11), Lacrosse (11), Youth Action Council (11), Scholars Symposium (9, 10, 11), Public Library Teen Advisory Board (10, 11)</p>

<p><em>I am about to be inducted into NHS, National Science Honor Society, Beta Club, and possibly National Dance Honor Society (I need more class hours for that one, but I’m really close)</em></p>

<p>I also have 150+ service hours (I plan to increase this by volunteering regularly at the local library and at the art museum as a docent), am currently co-chairing my school’s major service project (I will be chair next year), and will soon be starting an internship with a law professor at the local university that will last until graduation next year. I have been in numerous theatrical productions and have several awards (2 statewide) for history and leadership.</p>

<p>I am not taking the SAT until January, but my 10th grade PSAT scores were: 56 (m), 66 (c), 71 (w); I scored a 5 on my AP Euro. exam (I have yet to take any other AP exams [my school only allowed sophomores to take 1 AP]) and plan to self-study for at least 2 exams.</p>

<p>I am planning to apply to Columbia, Georgetown, Tufts, Wellesley, American University, NYU, BU, Furman,and Barnard next year. What are my chances and how could I improve them?</p>

<p>I think you have at least a decent shot at all the schools you listed. SAT scores should make a difference. Your extracurriculars don’t seem to be outstanding for the top-tier schools.</p>

<p>Kowloon: They’re listed…sort of. I am not taking the SAT I until January, so I listed my 10th grade PSAT scores (I don’t get my scores from this year until December/January, I expect those to be higher). As for AP scores, since I’m only a junior, and my school only allows sophomores to take one AP course. On the one AP that I have taken the exam for, I scored a 5. I plan to take the Bio. M, Math II, US Hist., and possibly Literature (I may wait until next year, when I have the AP Literature class) SAT IIs.</p>

You are African American and living with with a single parent. Your GPA and rankings are impressive. It’ll boil down to your SAT score, so I can’t give a strong verdict here…</p>

<p>Silverturtle: How do you think I could make my ECs stand out more? Should I go for more things on the national level? Right now, everything’s at a state- or regional level…</p>

<p>Right now with dance, in addition to taking class and performances, I also mentor at an elementary school and choreograph. I’ve also won local awards.</p>

<p>With Literary Society, I’ve been published in various local literary magazine (and have recently been competing in statewide and national writing competitions)</p>

<p>With the last two, I hold leadership positions.</p>

<p>Also, I am currently working on a service project (of my own design), and a large capstone leadership project.</p>

-gpa and class rank are great
-ur african-american and female, which will help you :slight_smile:
-colleges do take into account ur school and the place u live and ur income, etc.
-volunteer work is great!
-the fact that you’re only allowed to take 1 AP but you’re studying for more should help you…esp. since you should have quite a few AP/SATII scores in order to be considered (although they will take into account ur schooll district and stuff)</p>

<p>cons:
-SAT scores need to be better, which i’m sure they will be when u retake them
-do u have leadership positions for the clubs that yo’re in?
-you probably need more outstanding awards such as for math/science/whatever you really like to do.</p>

<p>but considering everything (and if you wrote a good essay) you’re probably in most of the schools u listed.</p>

<p>Narcissa: I chair committees for the Youth Action Council, and I hope to serve as a co-chair for the whole council next year. With Scholar’s Symposium, I’ve been a councilmember for the last 3 years. I’m VP and co-founder of Chess Club, and co-chairing a committee of the school’s winter project.</p>

<p>I have a few statewide awards for leadership and history, but this year I plan on focusing on national and international awards. Do you think (if I win anything) that that will boost my chances?</p>

<p>of course, international/nation awards will help you a lot, esp. with top colleges like columbia. since you still have a year to add on to ur resume, i think you have a very great chance at the colleges u applied for.</p>

apart from your unimpressive resume (sorry :frowning: )
your hook will definitely be how you come from a demanded background(demanded as in economics. People who are from LOW income families have a preference, since they had to suffer the inconviniences for lack on finance). </p>

<p>Well… I guess I cant tell for sure, but from presumed potential, I’ll say Columbia reach, and the rest slight reach/match.</p>

<p>I agree with Kowloon. Most everything on your resume is fairly solid for those schools. The minority status will be your biggest asset. Naturally, Columbia will be the biggest reach of those schools; it is still feasible, depending on SATs.</p>
