<p>I think this is an awesome gift and especially like that he is giving the gift as a memorial to his mother ;). CMU is an incredible school and this will enable CMU to do many more great things.</p>
<p>I think it is great! I particularly liked how the emphasis was on rewarding and continuing the multi-disciplinary approach to education at CMU.</p>
<p>Yes, I would like to see tuition stabilize also, but even as a parent paying almost full freight (just got a little scholarship this year --thank you CMU!) I think it is worth the cost. I had my doubts and writing the checks causes much pain. However, this summer I saw my S interact with his HS friends who attend other very prestigious universities (some public some private) I heard about being bored and ignored by profs, the lack of creativity, grade-grubbing peers with no interest in the subject…etc. I do not hear that from my S about CMU, EVER! I was moaning about the cost of CMU when a friend who encouraged his son to go to UVA over CalTech because of the cost differential told me to be thankful that I let son go to CMU over full ride scholarship to state-U. Being surrounded by creative students who are passionate about their fields of study to the point of being quirky is infinitely preferrable to being surrounded by uniformly bright but intellectually conservative students. The lack of risk taking by the students plus faculty that scorns multidisciplinary linkages and collaboration makes for a very boring and limited education. I taught at Pitt and I can understand why the benefactor thinks that CMU is more likely to use the money in a way that will benefit the students, community and country.</p>
