CMU Waitlist - Class of 2028

Yes, I mailed them and they said if you did not receive a mail by now offering you a spot, it means you are not going to be offered a spot. All the wait for nothing!

Anything related to the Tepper school of business? cause last week when I called they said they just started going through the waitlist.

Contacted the admissions department and they said they over enrolled for Tepper and it is highly unlikely that they go to the waitlist.

anything for dietrich?

I am sorry to say this but I think they have met their total requirement for every school. The admissions office representative had said that they may notify if space becomes available over the summer but it is very very unlikely.

I absolutely hate it that CMU waitlists so many eager candidates even though they are aware of the fact that a handful of prospective candidates are taken off of it.

They also had a priority waitlist and everbody seemed to be on it in the years before. It is their idea of soft-rejection. Not sure why they do it.

Exactly, I agree to your statement 100%

any email yet?

at this point we can take it as those who haven’t received the email are rejected

I gotta say this has left a really bad taste in my mouth about CMU. They should respect the kids enough to at least send an email that the waitlist is closed. And not waitlist 2x the number of students in the class. Shows a lack of regard. AOs do your job. Mine moved on a long time ago as I’m sure most have done. Good luck to y’all on your college journey!

I don’t understand how what CMU did this year is any different than what they and many other schools have been doing for several years. What happened should not have been a surprise to anyone and it’s why the advice is to always treat a waitlist as a soft rejection.

I realize that it is frustrating and I am not defending the practice, but colleges do a lot of crappy things in their own best interests during this process. CMU is far from alone in how they manage their waitlist, both in terms of size and notification.

Despite being super qualified and accepted to similarly ranked schools AND being a double legacy, my own daughter was waitlisted a couple of years ago. She didn’t wait around for CMU and emotionally committed to another top choice. Had she gotten off the list in July or even August, she would have considered it, but we knew based on historical data from the CDS that we should consider it a rejection.

FWIW, she just graduated from the other school and had the most amazing experience there.

I can only speak to my kids’ and their friends’ experience, I have not done research across the board and based solely on that anecdotal experience, CMU was the worst culprit. I understand the idea of a waitlist, but waitlisting over 9,000 kids for a freshman class of 1500? Two thousand more than the entire undergraduate college? That is just being lazy. Just do your job and reject the majority of the kids and put some on a waitlist if you truly might have accepted them if you had the space. And then, be respectful of all those kids you waitlisted and send them an update. It’s just common courtesy and from what I’ve heard there are actual human beings in the AO’s office making these decisions. My own kid moved on a long time ago, I’m just making the observation that in my personal experience, the way the CMU admissions office (and the AOs working for it) has acted has left a bad taste in my mouth.

At last today CMU sent a generic email confirming that they will not go to the WL this year. So let’s move on!

They went to the waitlist. They’re just done admitting students now :frowning:

They didn’t go for tepper or cs

How do you know? The email didn’t say anything about my college.

I emailed them a week ago and that is what they said as many people overenrolled in those two schools.
