My S is applying RD to several academically competitive schools. If a coach indicates that he is supporting my S in the recruiting process, is the coach expecting that my S will accept if he is admitted?

IMO the answer is no.

You have received no assurance of acceptance and so all options are open, no commitments on either side.

This is distinguishable from a coach telling you that admissions has told him that they will approve your application and you will get an acceptance letter if you commit (verbally) to him.

My two cents…If a particular coach is suggesting that quid pro quo without your son’s agreement then it is just wishful thinking on the coach’s part. The Coach can assume anything he wants unless your S has agreed to that arrangement and terms. Coaches typically use ED (not RD) for their supported athletes. ED is when they have the more influence, not RD especially with very competitve academic schools.

Usually there is some meeting of the minds with recruit and coach, and it is clearly communicated. Again, if the coach is unilaterally supporting your son that is a good thing for your son but you are not obligated to accept.
