Coaching Change

Has anyone experienced a total coaching staff change during the opening of recruiting? We had been talking to the recruiting coordinator, and expected an OV. When the head coach was let go, we reached out to our contact and got no response. Looking on website, it looks like all the coaches are gone. Should we restart from scratch?

We experienced this in swimming recruiting a year ago. There are a couple of approaches, depending on how comfortable you are:

1) Contact the Assistant Athletic Director in charge of that sport. If you cannot identify that person on the school’s website, then call and ask. Its really okay to call, I promise.
2) Wait it out to see if a new Head Coach is hired very quickly. If there is any coach left–then use them as your contact. The AD has assigned someone to manage the team as they go back to school in the next week–that’s the person you want to talk to further.

Chaos in recruiting at this time leads to great opportunities and great frustration. If you have had good conversations about the school with the previous coaches, and you are still very interested, then make sure the new team knows of your interest–almost to the point of being obnoxious. The new staff’s recruting will happen really, really fast if this is an early signing sport (November signing period).

However, a word of caution here. A new Head Coach will have a new philosophy in management of the team, recruiting and training. Make sure you still are interested too by asking the hard questions of the new staff, so you fully understand their approach. Do not be surprised that some athletes on the team may leave/transfer/quit after a new coach is hired.

It took one of the programs my son is dealing with three months to name a new head coach and coaching staff. It was April for a fall sport.

I would suggest the AD’s office as a good place to start. Also, you should be filling out recruiting forms again, and consider reaching out to a few more programs just in case.

Do you know if anyone has been recruited yet for the team? If so, you could consider reaching out to a committed recruit, and ask them if they know anything more than you. Whoever has talked to them, and reassured them, would be the best contact for you I bet.

Of course, you could also be wily and ask on forums dedicated to the sport in college whether there is “any news” about possible new staff and/or why the other coaching staff was sacked. You certainly don’t want to end up in a program that changes coaches every few years.
