I went to a small Christian college last semester where genders were separated in dorms but now im going to a new college in for the spring semester. Im a guy living in a coed dorm so i wanna know what to expect. Im pretty sure its not like media says it is with sex and alcohol all the time, but how quite is it and stuff. I like my peace and quite and privacy which is my main beef with college. I’ll probably be spending my time at football though because I’ll be walking on the football team as i was on scholarship at my last college for football. So yeah, what can i expect? Is it rowdy or peaceful. The college does rank in the top 10 for stds in the US though 0_0.
That statistic alone would be a sign to me… However it truly depends on the school. My school is mixed and in some buildings its loud (esp in freshman dorms) in others its not. My freshman year we were pretty loud constantly and I did hear sex quite a bit but now that I’m on a sophomore / upperclassmen floor its a lot quieter
The people in the room above mine were always having sex. The hallways are usually pretty loud in freshman dorms.
usually coed dorms mean that the building will have both boys and girls, however each floor is assigned by gender. so that wont be a problem. but in some dorms, coed exists on each floor as well. but your roommate will be of your same gender
My school put me in coed dorms my freshmen year. It was misleading because it just meant that both guys and girls are in one building but on separate floors. Ask your school.
Where on earth did this info come from? Many STIs are not reportable and many students do not seek treatment at campus clinics, which would be the only way to really gather this info.
I work in campus sexual health so I’d love to know where this came from.
A quick google search brought up this page of results I didn’t go through the sources but I did notice there were magazines and such covering it. https://www.google.com/search?q=colleges+with+most+std%27s&rlz=1CASMAE_enUS603US603&oq=colleges+with+most+std%27s&aqs=chrome…69i57j69i60j5j69i60l3.4297j0j4&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8
What magazines? I see a bunch of entertainment sites with no sources.
The closest you’re going to come is with which colleges have the worst sexual health resources- clinics, education, etc.
Look, the most common STIs among college students- herpes and HPV- are not only not reportable, most people don’t even seek treatment for them so there would be no way to collect data. HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, etc are reportable and some universities do collect their own data. I know that we collect data after we test clients but that is only for internal use and is not publicly available. The closest you could come for public research would be to break down sti reporting by county/zip code/sometimes city.
Coed dorms and bathrooms have been around for decades. The newest addition seems to be bathrooms for ‘Other’.
I should add that the reason I’m questioning the STI “statistics” is because it seems like an unnecessary point of worry for the OP.
If you have sex, use protection. Get an HPV vaccine. Best ways to protect yourself.
If you’re not having sex, then it’s really not something for you to worry about.
Freshmen dorms are rowdy regardless of whether or not they’re coed and people are going to be having sex around you no matter where you live. Try to avoid getting involved with a girl on your floor and you should be fine. The only part that took adjustment for me was the awkward walking past girls in just a towel or vice versa…
Oh well its cool anyway because i won’t be having sex anyway. Im at college to get a good career and play college football.
I lived in a coed dorm freshman year and then a single sex hall sophomore year. I vastly preferred the coed one because it meant that I could easily visit male friends without having to deal with BS regulations regarding visiting times. There were more parties in my coed dorm but that was mostly because it was a rural LAC with no off campus housing, vs a big university in a college town. As far as sex goes, I was occasionally sexiled but it was usually only for a few hours.
Obviously, every school/dorm will be a unique situation. Our school’s underclassman dorms were set up sort of like an Embassy Suites, where the design of the hallways discouraged loitering, and encouraged people to use the designated social areas of the building. This actually cut down on noise quite a bit… The upperclassman dorms/suites were set up more like a traditional dorm building with common hallways, but each suite had a separate living area that opened up to the hallway, and each room within the suite was isolated from the living area. So if you were in your room studying or sleeping, you couldn’t hear any noise from the hallway.
With that said, if noise is a concern, you should talk to housing and tell them your concerns. They may be able to accommodate your needs by grouping you up with similar students, and/or putting you in a room that is less likely to be in a noisy area.
Lol only for a few hours
It’s really not that big of a deal. It depends on the college of course, but generally freshman dorms are more sociable than upperclassmen dorms, but for the most part people keep to their own business. If stick to your own business, then whatever is going around you (being sexual or otherwise) is rarely noticable
Yea bro. Its actually really quite for the most so far. I hardly ever even see anybody in the hall way
I think you’ll get more of a difference with loud/quiet dorms when it comes to freshman vs. upperclassmen dorms, not coed vs. single gender. My loudest dorm was the freshman dorm.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. : )
