Colby [admit] vs. Scripps [waitlist] (and a few other schools [Sarah Lawrence]) for Art History

100% agree with this except for the class size prediction. Based on several years of stalking the 5C’s course registration portal, many art history classes do fill up, and most have a capacity of 10-20 (often 15). Pomona’s Intro to Art History class has 60 seats and still has extra students trying to “perm” into it. Even if there aren’t a ton of primary majors in art history, there are a lot of students in studio art, art conservation, the pre-architecture track of enviro analysis, and probably other majors, who need and/or want to take art history classes; so they seem to be fairly popular.

Yes, I meant the “advanced” courses specifically for art history majors - wasn’t clear in my post though :grimacing::woman_facepalming:t4:
25-30 for an introduction to art history would be common indeed and very good, indicating substantial general interest. 60, the Pomona number, is :exploding_head:

Take Scripps out of the equation. You are not accepted. The odds of getting off the WL are low.
Personally, I’d go with Colby, but if you like the vibe at SLC, it’s a great choice.

i know that. colby is the clear choice for me at this time. i am simply trying to be proactive, as scripps is my top choice overall and i am looking for loose ideas around that. i know that the chances of being admitted are low. i’ve reiterated this point in several other replies.

This post offers brief comments on Colby in the context of comments on other liberal arts colleges: NESCAC Spoken Here: - #5 by merc81 . However, It would be advisable for your own impressions from your visit to supersede those in the post.

I hope you like Colby at your revisit. Definitely try to talk to folks about the things you can do with Jan Plan and study abroad as well. (Maybe through Davis Connects as well.) There are almost certainly very cool ways to augment the on campus experience. And of course, check out the art museum.

It sounds like Colby to me – it is tied with Scripps/5C, and it has admitted you.

Colby is excellent – one of the most selective colleges in the northeast, well funded, etc.

It sounds like the dilemma comes if, and only if, you get off the WL at Scripps.

From Scripps 2023 CDS - better odds than many schools, but definitely always best to assume a waitlist is a soft rejection.

Good odds last year, but this tends to vary from year to year – often by a lot.

That is definitely true. Below is the CDS from the year before. Drastically different odds.

Most importantly - while WLs do happen, always best (in my opinion) to steer people away after they’ve gotten on…because if a student has hope, they’ll be checking each and every day and not focused on the bright future they’ll have ahead elsewhere.

hey guys! i’ve officially put down my deposit for colby and declined my offer at sarah lawrence! i met some really cool people and adored the campus (especially the coffeehouse). with that being said, scripps would still take the cake for me if i’m admitted off of the waitlist. i am still on the oxy + ucsc waitlists, but i plan to just decline the offers if/when they come in.

Congratulations on a self assured decision.:tada:
Perhaps remove yourself from the ucsc waitlist since lots of students are waiting and keeping their fingers crossed…
And of course :crossed_fingers: Scripps!

Congrats on Colby, which is a great school!

Can I suggest you remove yourself from the WL of schools you would decline anyway? They can admit an applicant who hopefully really wants to attend and not spend time reassessing the app of someone who isn’t interested. It’s the kind thing to do.

Contact admissions.

Just email admissions and let them know you’d like to be taken off the WL.
