cold feet

I applied to one master program only and I havent received any decision from them. But after thinking through today, now Im really uncertain of whether to go to the master program or not. Currently, Im a senior in undergrad and I feel that courses in my major (economics) are getting harder. Every time I go to lectures, I always dont understand some part of it. Every time I do my homework, I always get confused and stressed out. Do you think I should continue to pursue master in economics? But if I dont take master in economics, I need to start finding jobs and I feel that Im not ready yet either. Is anyone feeling the same way? What should I do?

If you are having doubts about your direction in life, you may want to consider taking at least one year off. You could defer admissions for a year and then see if you really want to continue or not in econ. Bonne chance!

If you suck at econ, you probably won’t be accepted by the schools you’re not qualified for.

Higher level courses are designed to be challenging. If you don’t quite understand a concept but can ace a test, then it’s a good sign…so ,I guess my question is: are you doing decently in the harder econ classes?

Your courses are getting hard because economics is hard. The fact that you are finding it challenging shows that you are finally getting to the real econ, and not the mickeymouse-capade that is introductory comparative statics.

You know what? I don’t understand everything in every lecture either. And even though my classmates make sure that their facial expressions never reveal that they are totally lost, if it’s a hard topic I know a lot of them are. They just happen to be, for the most part, too arrogant (typical economists)to admit it openly. They are competitive and want everyone to believe that they are the best. Every school has these people, but econ is really full of them unfortunately. Anyhow, we all go and review the notes/slides between classes, keep up with the material, and manage to get sorted before the exam.

Don’t get intimidated now. The fact that you made it this far shows that you are far brighter than most - it doesn’t matter if you aren’t the best in your non-representative reference group. And don’t pay any attention to people like nogardder. I find econ hard and my GPA was less than stellar; but I still got into the London School of Economics for graduate study (even though I “suck” at econ. lol).

Thanks Nauru for the encouragement. That is really true, I always see my classmates facial expression when Im confused, but it seems all of them understand. I did great on the midterm except for a game theory class (which is getting more confusing now), but after the midterm it seems everything is getting harder. In addition, Im taking an overload this semester, maybe thats one of the reason that Im stressed out.

Nauru, for a master degree, does the professor at the university select the students who get admitted? or is it just the admission people who select students who get admitted? and did you take calc 3 and linear algebra? Thank you everyone who replied.
