I just found out that I have to do a cold reading in one of my auditions. How much does this weigh in to anything else?I haven’t had that much acting training, the only reason I’m feeling confident if because I’ve been preparing these monologues since August!

I’ve never heard of any schools doing this, so it’s hard to guess how much it is weighted. You might want to ask the school – meanwhile, practice! Using a tape recorder, pick up an unfamiliar script, or even a good book. Record yourself reading a short section – go slowly so you don’t stumble over words, but do try to read with expression and emotion. Listen back to what you’ve recorded, and follow up by reading another section to make improvements. I learned this technique when I was working as a voice-over artist – it’s very effective and you can improve your skills rapidly.

tinysinger, what school is requiring a cold reading? I have never heard of a school doing this.

Hartt, I was told from someone who goes there.

I haven’t heard of a BFA in MT audition requiring a cold reading either and was gonna ask the same question that NMR asked. I would check with Hartt as to whether this will be part of your BFA in MT audition or not before concerning yourself about it.

When my son applied to Hartt two years ago (how time flies) they had a callback (although they didn’t define it as such) that involved reading from sides he was given about 15 minutes before he had to read them.

So at hartt, you get a call back? I havent really gotten any info about how the audition process goes.

At the MT audition at Hartt two years ago, some of the auditioners (not all) were given sides to look at after their audition, and were told they’d be given a few minutes to look it over and then would be called to read it. At the time, the auditioners were told that it wasn’t a callback, that the faculty just wanted to hear more from some students. While that might have been true, it seemed like a callback to me. However, it has been shown time and time again on CC that one cannot reliably read into things like this!

It was not a call back per se rather to hear more from some. They explained from the start that you may or may not be asked to return, but that it did not prove positive nor negative so do not try to read into it. They just needed a second look.
Two years ago (time does fly) my D auditioned for Hartt at the Unifieds, and was NOT called back (some were), however, she WAS admitted into their program.
Proves they meant their above explanation.

We do not have callbacks at Hartt. Sometimes the faculty feel that they need to see something more to be sure of how they are going to score an applicant. Sometimes a one minutes monologue just isnt enough. In those cases we ask the applicant if they can read sides. Please do not read anything more into it.
