Colgate Football Recruits

As with all football recruiting, the way to know if the coach is lying to you is if their lips are moving. Coach Hunt and Colgate are no different. Says all of the right things, but you can believe less than 50%. If you are a partial scholarship kid, make that less than 25%. If you are a partial, they want you for practice squad fodder and nothing more. You will sit behind a set of fully scholarship kids and never get a shot at the field, even in practice. Don’t waste your time, go play NESCAC and have fun.

It sounds as if you have an example in mind of a player who did not earn as much playing time as he and you would
have preferred? If so, then you might also discuss the other circumstances involved in the way this worked out. Such as the talent displayed by all the players and the needs of the team. The dynamic at Colgate is different than what is found at Division III Nescac schools given the competitive level of play, obviously, and so are the ambitions and talent levels of all of its football players. And about fun, If they choose to play football at Colgate they will find the environment very supportive.

It is sad when anecdotal “evidence” is delivered without any context and is used to smear a coach. Colgate’s Coach Hunt is an honorable man, by the way, and was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2017 when they won the league title with Lehigh. That says something.

Good luck with your college search!

sounds like @RUFKM2022 is already in college

Coincidentally, here is a piece from yesterday about Colgate football featuring Coach Dan Hunt. He is a great leader and a gentleman, a cut above:

Go ‘gate!

Just because a coach earned a award doesn’t meant they don’t engage in the unethical recruiting practices seen in many sports.

It’s true…for sports like football the practice team and the use of their bodies for the real players are needed. This poster has valid points and fair warning that other bright eyed athletes need to hear.

Referring to Dan Hunt and lying in the same breath is unacceptable. If you have some context deliver it and keep innuendo at bay. Just ridiculous.

Colgate operates a classy program and that is not hyperbole.

@Markham, Do coaches actually tell players and their parents that the kid will be sitting on the bench except for when it’s time to suit up to give the real team practice? I don’t understand why a kid who loves to play any kind of sport would pay for the dubious privilege of being just a member of the practice team with no real chance of getting to the field on game day. I can only imagine the feelings of the parents who pay to travel to their kid’s games when they realize their kid is never going to play. It must be much worse for the kids who are 3rd string backups for the practice team. If coaches are upfront with families during recruiting and specifically tell them the kid is being recruited for only the practice team, that’s honest. Anything less direct isn’t.

Sandusky was named Coach of the Year too. Twice. What that says is they had a successful team. It’s not a good gauge of character.

I’m well aware of recruiting practices and what it is like to play a college sport. Not only did I play D1, so did my dad, brother and niece. No one is guaranteed playing time. College Sports is a business. Players get the short end of the stick. Playing D1 is different from playing D3 or NAIA. Put academics first. My D14 was offered a full ride, but turned it down because it would have interfered with her degree. My S19 is being looked at, but seeing as he wants to major in physics or math…we are only considering D3 or NAIA. He is only looking for academic scholarships so that if he chooses not to play, he can walk away.
