Hi! I’m trying to decide between Colgate and Bucknell. I’m planning on majoring in Theater and Psych and I really want to go to a school that’s social too. Although if people don’t take their commitments seriously I will get frustrated. What is the student bodies like at these? Are people friendly?
the difference between the two are very subtle. Go visit and spend time around the theater students and faculty. Wander into studios, theater departments and rehearsal spaces and just say hi - theater profs will always talk to prospective students. Also look into art residential college at Bucknell and see if that seems to strengthen the fit
My stats are a few yrs old, but from what I can tell, the vast majority of students at Colgate are from the state of NY, whereas Bucknell is more diverse geographically. Also…just my experience…NewYorkers aren’t the. friendliest of people. I’m sure there are plenty of exceptions, but u seem to want a friendly place. This variable might be worth checking out.
Mooop,
Yours is an odd response. What do I mean? Generalizations and/or assertions, personal or otherwise, are not especially useful or helpful unless there are sources underscoring them. In my own search for facts I went right to Bucknell’s website to find the admitted students numbers, characteristics and statistics as well as the same information for all classes. Finding? Unlike the Colgate website which gives all that, well, it’s not at all helpful. Demerits for its look, feel, usefulness and content.
About where Colgate students come from, NY state, the other states and other countries, I believe you will find an interesting and diverse distribution. Can’t say re Bucknell. And won’t go into whether New Yorkers are friendly/ friendlier/friendliest. That’s hilarious.
In the meantime, applicants can look at USN&WR, Princeton Review and Kiplinger’s for more information, too. With the all important visit the applicant will get the information he or she seeks.
I wish good luck to applicants with their college searches!
Parent here with both a recent Colgate grad and a Bucknell Grad.
They are very similar schools. Colgate is a bit higher ranked in UsNews and its students have a bit higher stats.
Bucknell has a larger student body and has two highly ranked professional schools, Engineering and Business.
Both have beautiful campuses in small towns. Bucknell has a lot more shopping closer by.
Both are heavily Greek. My S did join a frat at Colgate but his cousin did not join a sorority. Both had lots
of friends. D2 did not join a sorority at Bucknell. She still had lots of friends. Both S and D2 were involved in thing not Greek based.
I think both schools are great. Would not recommend one over the other.
Markham, its nice to think people are just plain folks wherever u go, but in my experience of living all over the country, in several foreign countries, and studying and teaching at a dozen colleges, that just isn’t so. Are you telling me that if you walked into a room filled with 100 New Yorkers or 100 Nebraskans that u couldn’t tell the difference? The op was interested in friendliness. My point was if you’re looking for the friendlier place, you might want to think twice about going to the place that with such a high % of New Yorkers.
We lived in Rochester, NY for 2 years 25 years ago and are still talking about how friendly everyone was!
Mooop,
Just how many Colgate students and staff are from NY, how many are from Pa, the other states and other countries?
And while you are doing the research you might as well supply stats on faculty and staff. Same fror
Cont’d
Same for Bucknell.
Then overlay a current study or 2 representing the “friendliness” indices that apply to rural college communities in the NE US, maybe with Nebraska as a reference point, ensuring that the NY cohort at both schools get the opprobrium that they may deserve.
I look forward to reading your work. You may be on to something. But frankly I doubt it.
Good luck to applicants with the college searches!
Markham, thank you for proving my point.
Tennis, where else have u lived?
mooop,
If you think you have a point, and one worth proving, why don’t you prove it?
I imagine you believe that “everyone knows that…” and “it’s a fact that…” and yet you haven’t proven anything.
What this discourse proves to me is that liberal arts colleges have a lot of work to do. It’s about enquiry, discipline, structure and communication skills.
So thanks for the lesson and for challenging educators everywhere.
Good luck to college applicants and continuing education students!
Forbes rated “America’s Friendliest Towns” and the village of Hamilton was 11th on this very limited list of 15 towns – not of U.S. college towns, of all U.S. towns.
Colgate’s percentage of out-of-state students is really high for a college located near the geographic center of a populous state: 73%. (Compare to Stanford’s OOS: 57%.)
“Markham, thank you for proving my point.”
I’m not sure if markham has identified his/her state of residence. You seem willing, moooop, to characterize both states and posters rather uncritically.
@ellie83: Good luck with your decision!
Moving on from the question of the friendliness of Colgate students, faculty and staff, here’s a new article for your information. And it’s not an opinion piece…
Go 'gate!
