Collaborative vs. Competitive for Mechanical Engineering ?

We’ll be launching our first child soon. DD is a homeschool junior currently with a 4.0. She hasn’t taken the ACT yet but practice tests put her in the 32-35 range. She’s not taken APs but has gone the dual enroll route at our local community college and will have about 22 credits including chemistry, physics, algebra, calculus, economics, and English comp by the time she graduates.

Her extra-curriculars are mostly STEM-focused including Science Olympiad (she’s earned several individual medals and her team has won state two years running of the three years they’ve been competing). She’s also a prone rifle marksman currently working towards the highest level of her qualification program. She is not a competition shooter- she just competes against herself.

Despite the “winning” activities, she’s not a type-a competitor. She enjoys working hard and doing her best. She’s a humble introvert.

We live in Idaho and she’d prefer to stay west-ish. But, that’s not a hard-stop at this point. We’ve done some tours to get a feel for college sizes and types to shake out her preferences. So far she likes Mines. The fact that humanities are virtually non-existent was a big plus to her. She also likes the small size of Northwest Nazarene University. It’s the school nearest to home. She toured University of Utah and did not like the size. She talked to New Mexico Tech at a college fair and is interested in learning more.

Leaning conservative would be somewhat of a preference. But truly a classically liberal-leaning school that is not antagonistic to people that are different would be just fine. She just wants to learn and do the work. Greek life and a focus on college extra-curriculars are not her priority.

Would love to hear your ideas.

Thank you!
